E-Voting Reform Bill Gaining Adherants 161

JeremyDuffy sends us to Ars Technica for a look at an e-voting bill making its way through Congress that is gaining the support of the likes of Ed Felten and the EFF. Quoting: "HR 811 features several requirements that will warm the hearts of geek activists. It bans the use of computerized voting machines that lack a voter-verified paper trail. It mandates that the paper records be the authoritative source in any recounts, and requires prominent notices reminding voters to double-check the paper record before leaving the polling place. It mandates automatic audits of at least three percent of all votes cast to detect discrepancies between the paper and electronic records. It bans voting machines that contain wireless networking hardware and prohibits connecting voting machines to the Internet. Finally, it requires that the source code for e-voting machines be made publicly available."

+ - Harvard Physicists Bring Light to a Complete Halt

Submitted by
tetrikphimvin
tetrikphimvin writes "In a quantum mechanical sleight of hand, Harvard physicists have shown that they can not only bring a pulse of light, the fleetest of nature's particles, to a complete halt, but also resuscitate the light at a different location and let it continue on its way.
"It's been a wonderful problem to try to wrap your brain around," said Lene Vestergaard Hau, a professor of physics at Harvard and senior author of a paper describing the experiment that appears today in the journal Nature. "There are so many doors that open up." This is also noted in Harvard's Gazette here, which includes video links."

+ - Have you made money in Second Life?

Submitted by

ni42 writes "I'm writing a paper for my economics class about the viability (or lack thereof) of making money in Second Life. If you've made a serious attempt at it (I'll leave the definition of "serious" up to you), how much money have you made? Have you invested any real life money into it? How much of your time has it taken? Have you kept your profits inside of Second Life, or cashed them in for real money? Did you run into any unexpected or nonintuitive hitches? What factors (plans, skills, resources, etc) do you think have been key to your success, failure, or mediocrity?"
It's funny. Laugh.

+ - Genes Linked to Teen Delinquency

sporkme writes "An Australian study has found a link between antisocial behavior and specific genes, independent of parents' emotional influence.

"Our data shows that marital conflict is not a major culprit," said epidemiologist Nick Martin, from the Queensland Institute of Medical Research. "Rows have often been blamed for ratbag behaviour but we've got no evidence to suggest that they are the problem." Researchers, including several from the US, studied 1,045 pairs of twins and their children to see whether the link between parental fighting and kids' conduct problems was genetic or environmental. They found that children of an identical twin had the same levels of behavioural problems regardless of whether it was their parent or their parent's identical sibling that had marital rows.
The study was published in the journal Child Development, which is available by subscription."
