You can do that now. Just create a Family List and and a NY Friends List. That's what I do. Then, when you post an update, you'll see a little icon that lets you pick which lists can see it.
The Force is what holds everything together. It has its dark side, and it has its light side. It's sort of like cosmic duct tape.
