Journal Spy der Mann's Journal: How Microsoft helps SPAMMERS 3

Isn't it ironic that Microsoft, the company whose e-mail service hotmail is one of the most popular, is also the one giving MOST help to spammers?

You don't believe me? Read on.

Recently I joined Blue Security, a controversial anti-spam service which gives spammers a taste of their own medicine. I added my e-mail to their "do not intrude" list and downloaded their software, it helps me report complaints of spam semi-automatically.

Unfortunately I'm having trouble eliminating a particular spam from "tententwelvecorp", which is GIF-embedded spam with NO hyperlinks. It turned out that tententwelvecorp, the company responsible for sending this spam, is running botnets. I backtraced the SPAM e-mail headers and some of this spam is sent from the US, some from Brazil, etc. This sounds phishy, doesn't it?

And here's where things get interesting: According to zdnet, Most spam is generated by botnets.

In a Slashdot question to MS Security VP Mike Nash, I asked why they won't release patches to unregistered windows machines. They say that pirated machines don't have the right to ask for updates.

Don't these guys know that it's PRECISELY those machines running pirated windows, the ones that become part of botnets used to spam and infect other machines?

By only sending updates (specially anti-spyware updates which would prevent viruses from infecting your machine) to authorized PC's with their "Windows Genuine advantage", they're doing the spammers a favor: They're RESTRICTING patches from machines, which WILL, no doubt, become infected and turned into zombie PC's used to spread viruses AND spam.

Way to go, Microsoft! You have made the world a better place! (for spammers, that is).

  • Microsoft is doing this out of blind hate for pirates. More destructive actions are done from carelessness than malice--that's why Bush and his cronies are so dangerous.
    • It's not for pirates. It's for their reputation. They had to let pirates extend the user base enough to then grab their money away.

But frankly, I think their Vista delay will give Linux (specifically ubuntu and WINE) the handicap they need to reach critical mass. And then, bye bye, Microsoft!
  • Did you even read Mr. Nash's reply to the question about updates to unregistered Windows systems??? The high priority security updates are available to ALL Windows systems registered and unregistered. For clarification, please read below as it is the unedited response from the Q&A:

Nash: This is a great question and one that we struggled with as we established the policy. First, I should clarity one thing. While the Windows AntiSpyware offering is only available to users of licensed copies of Window
