+ - Wordpress recovers from huge DDoS attack ->

Submitted by alphadogg
alphadogg (971356) writes "Politically motivated hackers are being blamed for a large Distributed Denial of Service attack on the Wordpress blog management system that has left many customers experiencing severe disruption. In an official statement, the company described the attack as being of the order of "multiple Gigabits per second and tens of millions of packets per second," severe enough to affect the company's three datacenters in Chicago, San Antonio, and Dallas. Wordpress wrote: "This is the largest and most sustained attack we've seen in our 6 year history. We suspect it may have been politically motivated against one of our non-English blogs but we're still investigating and have no definitive evidence yet.""

+ - O2 block Google Translate from under 18s 1

Submitted by jolyonr
jolyonr (560227) writes "Are you one of the many people who are dismayed to see how easy it is for teenagers and children to get access to online translation services?

Well, fear not, because UK mobile internet operator O2 have now stepped in and made sure that Google Translate can no longer be accessed by anyone under 18.

"The site you tried to visit is restricted to over 18s", claims the statement when you visit the site.

To remove the block, you need them to charge £1 to your credit card. They offer £2.50 in mobile credit in return, but what about those who are under 18 and actually need something translated?

Almost certainly O2 are blocking this because their systems are not clever enough to block porn sites that are fed through Google Translate. But then what next? Blocking Google search because of the Cached pages?"

Editor, DLC Coming To Fallout 3 98

Posted by Soulskill
from the that-was-quick dept.
Bethesda has announced that an editor for the Windows version of Fallout 3 will be coming in December. They also said the first additional downloadable content for the Windows and XBox 360 versions will follow in January. MTV's Multiplayer blog got a few more details from Bethesda's Pete Hines, who said additions to Fallout 3 will resemble the Oblivion expansion pack Knights of the Nine in size and scope. MTV then brought up the question of how early publishers should provide DLC, pointing to Fallout 3 and Fable II as examples of games for which the expansions were planned to go live only a few months after launch.

Lunch with your preferred Presidential candidates for a high price?

ONE SEAT LEFT

I have arranged a private one-hour luncheon with Ron Paul on 11/28 in St.
Pete when he will be in town for the CNN/YouTube Republican debate.

This luncheon is reserved for $1000+ donors to Ron Paul's presidential
campaign. 19 people so far have paid and confirmed and will have the honor
and pleasure of having lunch and communicating with Ron Paul directly.

Go the the HELP committee website. The link is here.

Here you will see the names of the Committee members on the left hand
side
of the page. Please go to the individual websites of the Republican =
members
(this will take just a bit of leg work on your part by putting their =
name
into Google) and calling their office or sending a fax to them (email is =
the
least effective) stating your opposition to S. 1375 The Mother's Act.

Currently, the law prohibits political campaign activity by charities and churches by defining a 501(c)(3) organization as one "which does not participate in, or intervene in (including the publishing or distributing of statements), any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office."

I downloaded myself a copy and started looking through them. I found an interesting one on pages 47-48.

Karin Pouw of OSA of CofS writes a message.
It's forwarded by Michael Genung. He's the guy who runs ACSR, Association for Citizens Sociel Reform. http://www.citizensforsocialreform.org/ ["CSR Background and Philosopy: CSR was founded in 2001 by a group of Scientologists and other like-minded individuals concerned with the escalating social ills in society. CSR's purpose is to work with in the field of public policy to bring about more effective and humane solutions to these social ills of illiteracy, criminality substance abuse and general decay of character."]

Then it's forwarded by Doyle Mills, of LEAF fame (Letters to the Editor Attack Force).
Then it's forwarded by Mary C. (possibly one of two Mary C's I'm thinking of, but unsure).
Then it's forwarded by Mike Kaplan, another person who runs an email list and forwards CCHR type stuff to CofS members.

If that ain't stringing a line from the CofS to CCHR and the CofS front group ("grassroots") movements, then I don't know what is!

Apologies in advance as the Enturbulation servers will not be up to a slashdotting so the Coral Cache link is here Enturbulation Discussion (already cached for you)

ANYONE CAN REPORT TAX FRAUD DIRECTLY TO THE IRS : http://www.irs.gov/compliance/enforcement/article/0,,id=106778,00.html It does require that you print out and mail in an actual hardcopy, but it does not require you to identify yourself.

Just a casual user passing on a message from the Enturbulation forum, this is already out there, there's no reason to attack the messenger."

+ - Dominos Pizza = Latest Guerilla Ads

Submitted by SinGunner
SinGunner (911891) writes "On Youtube recently, there have been posts of a supposed spoiled rich girl (Mckenzie) who gets a red car instead of blue for her birthday and freaks out. Supposedly her little brother films the whole thing and posts it on Youtube. The resolution follow-up vids show her getting a new car and claiming to sell the old one on Ebay for 9.99 with a flash at the end for "anythinggoesdeal.com", which redirects (slowly) to Dominos' latest ad campaign. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzG_oHDLZdc

I'm not in marketing or an editor, you kids can re-write this with a Slashdot spin. It's bogus and only mildly amusing until you realize they're all actors and the joke is on you."

+ - A shadow lies upon all BSD distributions

Submitted by
Alan Trick
Alan Trick writes "Flameeyes (a Gentoo/FreeBSD developer) recently came up with some serious problems among the various *BSD projects who use BSD-4 licensed code (which is all of them). Even other projects like Open Darwin may be affected.

The saga started when he discovered the license problems with libkvm and start-stop-daemon. "libkvm is a userspace interface to FreeBSD kernel, and it's licensed under the original BSD license, BSD-4 if you want, the one with the nasty advertising clause." start-stop-daemon links to libkvm, but it's licensed under the GPL which is incompatible with the advertising clause. The good new is that the University of California/Berkley has given people permission to drop the advertising clause. The bad news is that libkvm has code from many other sources and each of them needs to give their permission for the license to be changed.

At the moment, development on the Gentoo/FreeBSD is on hold and the downloads have been removed from the Gentoo mirrors."

+ - New Disc to play HD-DVD and Blu-ray

Submitted by
srizah
srizah writes "Warner Brothers plans to announce next week a new videodisc, called a Total HD Disc, that can play both HD-DVD and Blu-ray. The announcement is expected to come at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this Tuesday. An excerpt from a New York Times article here "Barry M. Meyer, the chairman and chief executive of Warner Brothers, said in an interview that the company came up with the Total HD disc after concluding that neither Blu-ray nor HD-DVD was going the way of Betamax anytime soon. "The next best thing is to recognize that there will be two formats and to make that not a negative for the consumer," Mr. Meyer said. "We felt that the most significant constituency for us to satisfy was the consumer first, and the retailer second. The retailer wants to sell hardware and doesn't want to be forced into stocking two formats for everything. This is ideal for them."" http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/04/technology/04vid eo.html?_r=1&ref=technology&oref=slogin"

+ - U.S. Bars Lab from Testing Electronic Voting

Submitted by
joshdick
joshdick writes "A laboratory that has tested most of the nation's electronic voting systems has been temporarily barred from approving new machines after federal officials found that it was not following its quality-control procedures and could not document that it was conducting all the required tests. The federal Election Assistance Commission made this decision last summer, but the problem was not disclosed then. In a shock to no one here on Slashdot, experts say the deficiencies of the laboratory suggest that crucial features like the vote-counting software and security against hacking may not have been thoroughly tested on many machines now in use."
