MartinB writes "IBM's Roadrunner Supercomputer has achieved petaflop speeds at Los Alamos. Built from 6,948 dual-core AMD Opterons and 12,960 Cell engines and running Red Hat, Roadrunner outpaces the current Supercomputer Leader: Blue Gene/L (also at Los Alamos), which runs at a pedestrian 478.2 teraflops. Roadrunner will primarily be used for national security, but will also help scientists perform research into energy, astronomy, genetics and climate change. (Disclaimer: I work for IBM, but no priviledged information was used to produce this post)"
