Best Geek Phone?

Submitted by
Reality Master 101
Reality Master 101 writes "Recently we had an Ask Slashdot about simple cell phones, now I'd like to ask the opposite question. I'm thinking of replacing my phone, and I'd like to replace it with the best "geek" phone. What are Slashdotters using these days? It should have a great browser and have good third party applications, especially ssh (and an RDP client?) for remote access. The iPhone is out, of course. What deals did you get from the US carriers?"

History of MECC and Oregon Trail

Submitted by Gammu
Gammu writes "For the past thirty years, many children have been raised with a heavy diet MECC games like Oregon Trail, Odell Lake and Lemonade Stand. These products weren't developed by a major game developer. Rather, they were developed by the state of Minnesota for use in their schools. What began as an initiative to get Minnesota students ready for the micro-computer age turned into a multi-million dollar a year business whose products are still used in US schools even a decade after MECC was sold off to another developer. Read about the history of MECC (and especially Oregon Trail) at Silicon User."

iPowerWeb Compromised?

Submitted by
Martey
Martey writes "In a recent press release, StopBadware.org released to the public a list of the web hosting companies hosting the largest number of malicious websites, based on almost 50,000 sites submitted to them. Topping the list was popular web host iPowerWeb, which was hosting almost 20% of the sites on the list. Some have speculated that iPowerWeb's servers might be vulnerable. iPowerWeb has said nothing, although their home page claims that they are "hacker safe.""

Windows Live OneCare Can Eat Your Email 204

Posted by kdawson
from the have-a-care dept.
FutureDomain writes in to point us to a blog sponsored by PC Magazine, reporting about another problem with Windows Live OneCare. Apparently, it sometimes deletes the entire Outlook or Outlook Express .PST mailbox when it finds a virus in one of the messages. The only solution is to tell OneCare to exclude the entire Outlook mailbox. This is the software that came in last in antivirus tests. The trail of tears is ongoing over on the Microsoft forums.

Rebuilding George Washington

Submitted by
Roland Piquepaille
Roland Piquepaille writes "According to The Arizona Republic, American researchers have created realistic faces of George Washington by using 3-D scanning, forensics technology and software. They started by scanning a bust of the first U.S. President when he was 53 and developed a special software with the help of an anthropologist to build realistic models of his face at different ages. Once the digital images were created and validated, a New York studio built statues of George Washington as a 19-year-old surveyor, a commander in chief at age 45 and taking the oath of office at Federal Hall at the age of 57. These statues can now be seen at the George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate. And the technology behind this re-creation can be used on other famous characters. Read more for additional details and pictures of George Washington's rebuilt faces and statues at various ages."
