Journal Mantorp's Journal: Why is Bush still popular with the military? 14

He brought them to war for no good reason. His administration ridiculed the generals who correctly stated we needed more troops. People around the world generally dislike the US military mainly because of this war and the torture scandal at Abu whatever. I could go on and on. But, what it boils down to is however you slice it Bush has brought nothing but misery to the armed forces. Yet they still love him. I don't get it.

Why is Bush still popular with the military?

  • Military exists to fight, be deployed, if they kept on excercising they would not be respected. For them, human life is the second thing. The first thing is pride and dignity, and even if they cost their lives, their family and relatives would be rewarded. For them President Bush keeps on being their heroes forever. These are similar to the spirit of samurai.

Thank you very much for befriending me. Let me make a comment in your JEs from now.

    • Sure, so what you're saying in a nutshell is. They are soldiers, soldiers fight wars. Bush brought war, hence they are happy.
    • I disagree: the military serves to *defend* you country. Fighting wars is not the main reason. Defense is. That means that fighting is the last resort, if your country is in danger. Whether the US was in danger or not is another discussion altogheter.

As for the hero part: fight in a war doesn't make you a hero. Heroic stuff makes you a hero. A firefighter saving people at the peril of his life is much more a hero than a soldier being deployed in a hostile country. If you died while being a soldier

      • OK, so if they're in praqctically unwinnable war not defending the nation, why do they still love him?
        • I have no idea... Isn't the military always biased to the Republican party? It's about the only thing that I can think about. I didn't want to answer your question, just stated my opinion on the function of the military.
        • The previous Commander in Chief wasn't exactly someone who liked the military. Bush has been pumping money into the military industrial complex. He is obviously a 'pro-military' leader.

If the previous management disliked you, and the new management likes you... the new management will earn a lot of respect from the troops. What goes around comes around.

      • Nice to meet you, I'm afraid you don't have to disagree with my comments. People who start the war usually do not believe their war is aggression, they think they are just simply defending their country from outsiders. Both Afgan &Iraqi wars were held far from main land US but many Americans as well as American soldiers are supposed to have thought their wars were for defending their country from terrorists' threat. So I guess all soldiers deployed outside US soil believe that they are defending US wit
  • I think it's partly a case of programming - they're trained to respect and obey the orders of their commanding officers, and the President is the top of the chain of command. Another aspect may be the psychological effects of beleiving that you're risking your life for a Good Thing. Nobody wants to die for a wrong cause.

I'd bet that if you asked many of the military Bush supporters what policies of his they are in favor of, you'd probably get vague answers relating to his single-minded focus on attacking

    • don't you think a lot of that stems from that he was able to convince people that Iraq is a direct retaliation for 9/11?
      • Yeah, that's probably true. But even as that rationale has faded, there are certain groups of people whose faith in Bush has not dwindled as it should. Your example of the military is a good one - I think there are others (religious groups) who are having the same disconnect with reality and their best interests when it comes to supporting Bush.
  • Not all military members support Bush. There are hundreds of thousands of people in the military, so there is no monolithic thought process. But that said, probably the majority do support what is going on in Iraq.

I think they are supportive of it because regardless of why they ended up there in the first place, they see the need to be there and are glad to be bringing freedom to people who lived under a horrible dictator.

I think that they look forward to seeing Iraq as a success that they
