+ - Kim Dotcom search warrants ruled illegal->

Submitted by
Malacca
Malacca writes "In New Zealand:

"A High Court judge has ruled that police search warrants used to seize property from Kim Dotcom were illegal.

Judge Helen Winkelmann found that the warrants used did not properly describe the offences to which they were related.

The FBI agents had been accused of underhanded behaviour by Dotcom's lawyers in the High Court after they secretly copied data from his computers and took it overseas.

Judge Winkelmann has also ruled it was unlawful for copies of Dotcom's computer data to be taken offshore.""

Writer Peter Watts Sentenced; No Jail Time 299

shadowbearer writes "SF writer Peter Watts, a Canadian citizen, whose story we have read about before in these pages, was sentenced three days ago in a Port Huron, MI court. There's not a lot of detail in the story, and although he is still being treated like a terrorist (cannot enter or pass through the US, DNA samples) he was not ordered to do any time in jail, was freed, and has returned home to his family. The judge in the case was, I believe, as sympathetic as the legal system would allow him to be."

Malacca writes "Charles Stross has a new SF novel out. Halting State is in his own words, "a near-future thriller of skullduggery and rules lawyering in the shadowy world of massively multiplayer virtual reality games." It's already received praise from Vernor Vinge, John Carmack, Bruce Schneier, William Gibson & Cory Doctorow and is shaping up to be a serious contender for best read of the year. Excerpts of Halting State (Prologue and first three chapters) are available at Stross' website; readers can get a taste & see what all the fuss is about. The first hit is free. :)"

While it's true that the initial tip-off came from two high-schoolers, their results were confirmed by Commerce Commision testing. One can safely assume that the confirmatory tests were conducted under controlled conditions in an accredited laboratory. Which is why GSK copped the fine & has been trying to limit damage ever since.
