Laid-Off NASA Workers Build Rocket-Inspired Tr->

Submitted by RedEaredSlider
RedEaredSlider writes "An entrepreneur decided to make use of the talents of laid-off NASA workers to build a new kind of three-wheeler.

Ray Ackley ran into a group of about 15 NASA engineers that were looking for some work to do on the side, since they knew they might well lose their jobs once the Shuttle program was cancelled.

The Emerging Growth Institute, a nonprofit that works with emerging technology companies, and Ackley got together with the engineers and said they should design a frame for a vehicle — a three-wheeled one. They called it the Treycycle and formed a company, Treycycle Gold, to mass-produce it.

Besides having three wheels, there are some new wrinkles to the design. The frame is molybdenum alloy, offering a lot more strength and rigidity than one would have on a typical motorcycle. The engine is an off-the-shelf Chrysler model. Welding is done by putting the frame in a kind of truss that allows for putting together the joints all at once, rather than piecemeal."

MrCrassic writes "Looks like it might be the beginning of the end for webOS presence at HP, as The Register just announced that they laid off 525 webOS developers. From the article:

HP is laying off up to 525 staff from its global webOS hardware biz, according to reports. The tech titan confirmed last month it is shuttering the unit that produced the ill-fated TouchPad and Pre3 devices. “As communicated on 18 August, HP will discontinue the development of webOS devices within the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2011, which ends 31 Oct 2011,” an HP spokesperson told AllThingsD in the US.

Citizendium after one year

Submitted by
Larry Sanger
Larry Sanger writes "Citizendium, "the Citizens' Compendium" — a free, non-profit, ad-free, wiki encyclopedia with real names and a role for experts — has just announced that it's celebrating the one year anniversary of its wiki, an occasion for which I wrote a project report. Make up your own mind about whether "we've made a very strong start and an amazing future likely lies ahead of us." We have been the subject of a lot of misunderstanding, but we've still proven a lot, such as that a public-expert hybrid wiki is consistent with accelerating growth and leads to high quality, or that eliminating anonymity helps remove vandalism. We've got lots of initiatives and plans, and signs are good that we are starting into a serious growth spurt. Might the Web 2.0 umbrella be expanded to include real name requirements and roles for experts? It's looking that way."
