Comment: ISPs arn't ready (Score 1) 547

If physical media is to be replaced by downloads for 1080p HD content anytime in the near future, someone better tell the ISPs, especially in Canada. I'm a Rogers customers (which seems to be becoming the pariah of ISPs in terms of thottling and bandwidth limits), and I'm allowed 60Gb/month as a "mainstream", or average customer. I can get more, if i want to pay for it, but i'm already paying enough for my 60Gb.

If I want to download a single Blueray, that will use more than half of my monthly allowance.

Until the ISPs start handing out realistic speeds and bandwidth caps, at realistic prices, this will never happen.

Portal Patch Released, Speculation Begins

Submitted by Lokatana
Lokatana writes "Valve Software released a patch to the popular game Portal yesterday, which has spawned speculation that this is the beginning of a viral marketing campaign for a new game. Some believe that this is a precursor to Portal 2, while others support the idea that Half Life 2, Episode 3 is almost here. Either way, evidence is mounting that something big is happening for fans of this game. New achievements in the game, Morse coded messages added to different levels, new images found inside of the game files, a Washington area BBS phone number that streams more intriguing hints and images — more is being discovered as we speak. One thing seems to be agreed by all... GlaDOS is, well, still alive."

Comment: Impact of Corporate PC Virtualization Projects (Score 4, Informative) 232

Many corporations are taking a serious look at PC virtualization, which eliminates the need to purchase PCs.

Instead, toss a bunch of blade racks together, virtualize your userbase, simplify your desktop management, address many of your network security issues, keep all your data "safe" in the data center, allow better user experience for remote users... lots and lots of benefits (if you can get it to work).

In my company (a large bank), we are due to refresh 10's of thousands of PCs, yet instead, we may refresh NONE of them, go with virtualization (and the saved costs of keeping older PCs will fund the new infrastructure). With PCs bought in the last 3-4 years, acting as thin-clients, we can keep them until they break, and replace them with some cheap thintops.

If many companies are going down this route, then it would be no surprise, coupled with the economy, that PC sales in the corporate world would be dropping!

IT Concepts for New Project Managers 1

Submitted by
Lokatana
Lokatana writes "After an 8-year hiatus, my wife is ready to rejoin the corporate world. An experienced people manager from a non-technical field, she's switching careers to be an entry-level IT Project Manager (She's already working on her PMP designation). While she is proficient at using a computer, she has very little exposure to Information Technology (ie, raised floors, networks, storage, facilities, etc). I'm trying to locate books or resources that will be helpful to introduce her to Information Technology concepts that she will be exposed to in a Project Management capacity, so that she has a general understanding when she begins managing her first project. What resources would you recommend?"

NASA to scientists: Reveal sex history or lose job 1

Submitted by

Markmarkmark writes "Wired is reporting that all NASA JPL scientists must 'voluntarily' (or be fired) sign a document giving the government the right to investigate their personal lives and history 'without limit'. According to the Union of Concerned Scientists this includes snooping into sexual orientation, mental & physical health as well as credit history and 'personality conflict'. 28 senior NASA scientists and engineers, including Mars Rover team members, refused to sign by the deadline and are now subject to being fired despite a decade or more of exemplary service. None of them even work on anything classified or defense related. They are suing the government and documenting their fight for their jobs and right to personal privacy."
