Journal Le Marteau's Journal: [Weapons] New Addition to the Arsenal 15

An H&K .40 caliber USP. Good Wikipedia article on USP's here.

Good ol' German engineering. Sixteen round magazine. Can carry safely cocked and locked (like a 1911) or double action first shot, single action after that. Utilities rail. Manual safety (unlike, say, a Glock). Of course, you don't need to set the safety, and then it's just as good (or as bad) as a Glock. Nice, firm revolver-like pull in double action mode (which I like) or you can cock it (like a revolver, of course) for a nice single action trigger. The safety lever also serves as a de-cocker.

I NEEDED it ;^] Everything else I have only holds seven or less rounds. I wanted a true 'pray and spray' model, just like the gangstas and cops have.

Have not fired it yet. Still learning it and want to field strip it and such before I break it in.

[Weapons] New Addition to the Arsenal

  • My USP is a compact rather than a full-size, and so only holds 12+1 (and I don't even have any 12 rounders for it, they aren't worth the price premium over the 10 round mags).

I just bought myself something new as well. A Stoeger Cougar 8000 [stoegerindustries.com], also in .40. Hopefully it will arrive today or tomorrow.

  • my only regret about my sig was not getting it in .40. i'd love to have an h&k - maybe someday. that recoil reduction system sounds awesome.

    • Maybe Santa will get me Home Boy Nite Sytes [norvetnet.no].

It does look cool, but shooting that way is the mark of an untrained amateur. Basically that's because no school or instructor would teach aiming like that. I'm not sure why, because there really is nothing about aiming 'gangsta style' that would make it inherently a bad way to aim, it's just that no respectable instructor teaches it like that.
      • the reasons are 1) Stance 2) Grip 3) Sight Alignment

1 & 3) You cannot have a solid stance with one arm rotated like that. When the gun fires, the recoil will push your right arm towards your left, the recoil will hit your left arm (or face) and the recoil pulls the aim off center. You then have to push your right hand to the right to reacquire the target and you push up from the ground to counteract gravity. A simpler motion is achieved by the gun jumping up, while maintaining your left-to-right alig
  • I was thinking about a USP 9 compact (var 1) myself for my last purchase, but ended up getting a G19, instead. As a 1911 fan, I did like the "cocked and locked" carry option, but opted for the G19 since I was short on funds and really liked the ergonomics of the Glock. Maybe someday I will get a USP. Anyway, congrats and enjoy... I'd like to hear about how it shoots.
    • I took it out to the range first time yesterday.

I'm a wheelgun guy. I subscribe to the "Six (or seven, or five) for Sure" philosophy. But like I said before, I wanted a high capacity autoloader just to round out my collection.

I demand 99.9% reliability for my carry weapons. If I were to carry an autoloader, I MIGHT carry it if i got one failure to eject/feed per 1000 IF that was able to be cleared with a re-rack (which is more than I can say for my snubnose which got jammed once from a squib load and req
      • Glad to hear you enjoyed it and had good luck with it. The USPc is still the only .40 I have fired (even the gun I rented the first time I shot was a .40 USPc), so I can't say much about the recoil, but the round definitely has some major kick to it. But I've never had a problem with it, reliability-wise. I think that these days most autoloaders are pretty reliable.

Mmm, expensive gunleather. I still need to do that for my GP-100.

        • And congrats on your purchase, as well. I have not been able to check it out due to firewall issues, but I will.

Ya, gunleather. I like that stuff almost as much as what goes in it. Got a shopping bag at home almost full of it.

In re the reliability of autoloaders, I only own two others ("only". What have I become?) An NAA .380, which has never jammed, but which has had to be sent back to the factory two times, and needs to go back a third for broken internals, and a Glock G36, which was recalled by the f
          • Well in my mind an H&K is about as good as it gets. Sig comes close, but Sigs don't tend to be lefty-friendly.

My Bersa has had a few issues, but I've learned that they're my fault. Being a lefty, I don't use slide releases (plus I think it is better for the gun to slingshot the slide rather than dropping the slide lock lever). Sometimes I would get a failure to feed on the first round of the mag, and I've learned that it's because I was "riding the slide" slightly. Since then I've learned not to d

          • I'll try and do a JE on it later, but I dunno when I'll have time. Here [pbase.com] are pics.
            • Well, ya learn something new every day. Now that is something you don't see every day. Never even knew there was a manufacturer 'Stoeger'. But then I never fired my first gun until about four years ago, so i have a lot of catching up to do!

And the 'Cougar' lineage. Again, something I knew nothing about. Many thx for sharing.

Looks like an excellent carry piece. Looks slim, with nice curves to avoid catching or unsightly bulges.

Although I would probably never buy one, because Galco does not make holster
              • Ah ha, perhaps they do! Stoeger is primarily known as a shotgun company, and they're owned by Benelli. Benelli happens to be owned by Beretta. Beretta built the Cougar 8000 line for a long time, until they decided to discontinue it last year, and shipped all the tooling to Turkey and is now having Stoeger build it. So see if Galco makes holsters for the Beretta Cougar 8000-- they're identical.
                • Well, I took my USP back to the range today to finish testing it to see if I can trust it and it passed. Put 200 rounds of Federal red box through it, then 100 rounds of Winchester Ranger Law Enforcement ammo through it, and not one jam or FTE/FTF. Total of 400 rounds since I got it. I am a very happy camper.

The guy at the shop said the Winchester Ranger ammo is really the old 'black talon' line, re-branded. They say on the net that Winchester only wants it sold to law enforcement, but this is Colorado,
                  • I've heard of Ranger, but I don't think it's the former black talon. Supposedly Winchester SXT is the old black talon-- the SXT reportedly means "Same eXact Thing."

Never trust a computer you can't repair yourself.
