Simple three card spread. "Past, Present and Future"

PAST: Page of Pentacles. Represents "application, study, scholarship" (according to Waite). No ambiguity there.

PRESENT: Eight of Cups. The picture on the card shows "a man of dejected aspect". "In practice, the card shews the decline of a matter". It is a card of weariness, 'moving on', 'weighed down by worries'. No ambiguity there. The meaning is clear.

FUTURE: Nine of Pentacles. The card shows "a woman taking a leisurely stroll through the gardens of her estate. She is clearly a lady of refinement and grace, so it is incongruous to see on her left hand a bird trained to hunt and kill on command."

The bird is the key. She is holding a bird of prey. A bird(!). A thing of power, but her refinement controls it. The card is one of well-being, and mastery.
