Journal JWSmythe's Journal: Linux Tech Wanted - Inquire Within 5

This is a serious job offer. Promise.

    Wanted:
Assistant Systems Administrator to help with the day to day operation of a large network. 100+ Linux servers, 1/2 dozen Windows servers, and a dozen windows workstations.

    Location:
    Glendale, CA

    Requirements:
        Proficent in:
        Linux
        Perl
        Apache
        TCP/IP (obviously)
        Basic shell scripting (csh/tcsh/bash)
        PC based server hardware
hacking and DoS (for defense from)
        Willing to learn

    Pay:
        Low

    Hours:
10am to 5pm, but flexable. Must be willing to carry pager and respond to pages 24/7

    Other useful knowledge:
        MySQL
        PHP
        rsync
        Linux kernel compiling
Cisco networking (100baseTX and GigE switched)

    Responsibilities:
Act as backup for Senior SysAdmin. Take care of admin tasks when he isn't available.

        Independently handle server "emergencies" 24/7

        Answer technical support Emails.

Put up with idiosyncrasies of network and Senior SysAdmin.

        Description:

Generally, I need someone available who can do everything I do. No degree or certification required, I just want someone who knows Linux very well, and can handle themselves with servers, identifying faults and fixing them independantly.

Our servers are custom built Asus based servers, Asus 1400r, SuperMicro 1u, plus a few "Big Ugly Dell's" (tm), and some hosted servers for 3rd parties.

Most days are fairly laid back, but occasionally we have hectic days, where people start DoSing servers, and breaking into unpatched hosted machines. Oh, and don't forget 150,000 virus infected Emails per day beating down the mail server.

Generally, I make hardware/software decisions, but it would be nice to have someone working with me that knows what I'm doing, and can keep up when the need arises. You won't be writing most of the Perl (unless you can), but it would be nice if you can read and understand what others have written.

The pay isn't going to be much (I don't do the pay, the company does, they make that decision), but it would be a good opportunity for someone with good Linux/*nix skills from using their home machine, who can write a bit of Perl, and wants some good resume entries for the future. Excellent opportunity for someone just out of high school or in college.
