It's funny. Laugh.

Journal Interrobang's Journal: The Schlafly-Coulter Centre for Feminist Research 6

Aside: Ok, I need a break. Things are going weird here in a way I won't get into (lest I bore you with the details). Nevertheless, Eschaton has a tale of a lovely revenge prank, and the comments to follow present a refinement of the concept so delightful in its exercise of cutting irony that it is to laugh, and to forget about a certain dim bulb sitting in Emerg and calling me to ask me to call the consulate. But I digress.

In Atrios' comments, one can find the "X Endowment for [ironic-cause-here]" concept refined to truly Horatian satirical extremes. The clever Eschaton readers give the world:

Trent Lott Fund for The United Negro College Fund
John Ashcroft "Right to Privacy" Foundation
Donald Rumseld Fund for the Preservation of Mesopotamian Culture
George Walker Bush Fund for the Preservation of America
The Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson Fund for Freedom From Religion
Ted Nugent for Save the Whales
Michael Savage Foundation for Autism Research
The Trent Lott Foundation for Cross-Cultural Understanding
The Michael Graham Domestic Violence Awareness Fund (the associated comment was "I'm having way way too much fun with this.")
The Bob Packwood Institute for Promoting Gender Equality
The Jonas Savimbi International Fund for Peaceful Conflict Resolution
The Christy Whitman "Save Our Forests" Fund
The G.W. Bush Fund for Promoting French Culture
The Bush Family Foundation for Research into Alternative Fuel Use
The Ari Fleischer In Defense of Truth in Advertising Fund
The Donald Rumsfeld World Peace Organization
The Antonin Scalia Foundation to Abolish the Death Penalty
The Kenneth Lay Foundation for Excellence in Corporate Management and The Kenneth Lay Center for Business Ethics
The Ronald Reagan Fund for Fiscal Responsibility
The Saxby Chambliss Foundation for Honoring Disabled Vietnam Vets
The D.A.R. Foundation for Promoting Progressive Politics
The Rupert Murdoch Fund For Independent Journalism
The Charlton Heston Fund in Support of Gun Control Laws
The Tom DeLay Fund for the Promotion of the Voting Rights Act
The Tom Craddick Association to Support Responsible Law Enforcement and its sub: the Special Fund for Citizens' Review of Law Enforcement Abuses

I think we shouldn't restrain the humour here. How about The Edwin Meese Center for Sex-Positive Studies, The Ronald Reagan Memorial Holocaust Research Foundation, and the Schlafly-Coulter Centre for Feminist Research.

On the Canadian side, we could have The Mike Harris Centre for Accountability in Politics, or the Stockwell Day Multiculturalism Foundation, the Stephen Harper Centre for Progressive Canadian Studies, the Brian Mulroney Fair Trade Promotion Fund, and the Ernie Eves Centre for Responsible Government Policy.

Hey, in a world where Log Cabin Republicans support their natural enemies and anti-sex-work feminists get in bed with Christian fundamentalist social conservatives, never underestimate the value of a little pointed satire.

Update: There are more comments as of this writing (7:59 PM), and they're doozies!

This would be funnier if it was "The Gayle Norton 'Save Our Public Lands' Fund". Whitman was the head of the EPA and overall wasn't too bad, besides she is res

The anti-sex-work "feminists" are insane. The could work for the achievable ideal of making everyone in heterosexual pr0n a sex object. But, no, they have to ally with the enemies of all that is good and honest in this world and apply a resistible force to the immovable object that is
    • ...so much as the prostitution. However, in places where prostitutes are unionizing and conditions are improving (and/or places where people work in the sex trades because they want to be there), it's nuts. I mean, I'm all for ending forcible trafficking and sex slavery and the like, but for goodness sakes, if someone wants to sell sex for money, you should let them.

I don't have a problem with porn, either. I don't particularly go looking for it, but I don't particularly want it to disappear either. T
