When Politicians Tax Violent Video Games 315

Posted by samzenpus
from the hands-in-the-cookie-jar dept.
talien79 writes "Taxing video games has a storied history in state legislatures. The reality is that video games, violent or otherwise, simply make too much money to be stopped. But taxing them is a viable compromise, a 'sin tax' of sorts similar to that levied on cigarettes. This article reviews the time-honored tactic of politicians pandering to their base: taxing violent video games."

Famous "Baby in my cup" chimp dies.

Submitted by Anonymous Coward
An anonymous reader writes " Washoe, the famous chimp who learned sign language, has died. She became famous not only for learning a fairly sizeable vocabulary, and demonstrating that she understood rudimentary grammar structure by telling her researchers "baby in my cup" when they placed a little doll inside her cup, but she also was able to teach some sign language to three other chimps."
It's funny. Laugh.

PCI-Express External cabling standard announced

Submitted by
symbolset
symbolset writes "The PCI-SIG has announced the release of the PCI Express External Cabling Specification V1.0. This standard allows for transfer of data through an external cable at 2.5GT/s (For the x16 cable, 8GB/s) to a cable length of up to 10 meters. An update is expected to double this speed to 5.0GT/s.

A limited review is available on The Inquirer, with pictures. The products are apparently already in production.

Is this new standard likely to change the game for graphics adapters and RAID controllers? What other devices might benefit from a high speed external serial point-to-point connection?"

Will RFID tags work on Mars?

Submitted by
Roland Piquepaille
Roland Piquepaille writes "According to Computerworld, NASA will start to test this summer if RFID technology can survive in outer space. A variety of RFID tags will be on the space shuttle Endeavour in July during a trip to the International Space Station. Then they'll be installed inside containers attached to the exterior of the ISS and stay there for a year before a return to Earth for analysis. If these initial tests are successful, NASA will check at the end of 2009 if RFID tags will work on the Moon. But the real goal is to ease the daily lives of the astronauts who will travel to Mars. Read more for additional details and a picture showing how all these RFID tags will be attached to the ISS."

Security Clearances

Submitted by
ellindigo
ellindigo writes "I work as a UNIX/Linux Systems Administrator for a large corporation. My company is submitting me for a TS-SCI with Full Polygraph security clearance, and today I attended a meeting where they described how the process works. They stressed that the questioning and the polygraph would be very invasive and would include my lifestyle, past egregious acts (I suppose we all have at least one), and anything else they find worthy of attention. My question for Slashdot readers is this — should I go forward with the application process? If I go through all of this scrutiny and don't get the clearance, will the government keep those records on me? What are the ramifications of being documented this way?"
