RIAA Backs Down After Receiving Stern Letter

Merchant, in California, the defendant's lawyer wrote the RIAA a rather stern letter recounting how weak the RIAA's evidence is, referring to the deposition of the RIAA's expert witness (see Slashdot commentary), and threatening a malicious prosecution lawsuit. The very same day the RIAA put its tail between its legs and dropped the case, filing a Notice of Voluntary Dismissal. About an hour earlier NYCL had termed the letter a "model letter"; maybe he was right."

kalyanbk writes "The International Cricket Council has ordered World Cup Clips to be taken off YouTube as copyright infringement http://content-usa.cricinfo.com/wc2007/content/cur rent/story/287319.html However cricket has only 10 full-time countries and the majority of people are deprived of watching the world cup if resident in other countries or have to pay exorbitant amounts to catch the action. Even within the 10 countries television channels fight to get exclusive rights on Pay Per View and it is estimated around 75% of the cricketing world does not have easy access to cricket. Others pay through their nose for PPV or put up with endless ads to the tune of 2/3 ads every 4 minutes and also running ads on screen throughout the game. China: 1.6 Million Pirated DVDs Seized

Nihaoma writes "Chinese officials seized 1.6 million illegal DVDs in southern China in the country's largest anti-piracy haul of the year, a film industry group said Monday. The midnight raid on the DVD factory and storage center in the city of Guangzhou turned up pirated versions of Chinese, American, Korean and Japanese movies and TV shows, according to the Motion Picture Association, which said it tipped off the authorities"

suka writes "In a recent interview with the online edition of an Austrian newspaper, Mono project-lead Miguel de Icaza pleads for cooperation between Mono and Microsoft's .Net: 'I think that the deal should include a technical Mono/.NET collaboration, and even go as far as Microsoft recommending Mono for all of their developers looking at migration'. The whole interview has some other interesting bits, like de Icaza's thoughts on open sourced Java and information about upcoming versions of Mono."

Overly Critical Guy writes "Vista's sales numbers don't add up according to Joe Wilcox of Microsoft-Watch. Going through the numbers and citing NPD, Gartner, and IDC, Wilcox describes the difference between licenses sold to manufacturers and actual consumer purchases, noting that there haven't been 20 million PCs sold since Jan. 30, contrary to Microsoft's numbers. In fact, only 3 million PCs have been sold since the start of the year."

First, BBN, was awarded an almost $3.5 million increment of a $14 million Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) contract to continue work on military applications of quantum information science.
