And I'm not even in our security team, I hate them as much as the next guy... but you can't just be all willy-nilly adding hosts to their network mate. On the one hand, it's nice that it empowers you to work better - because making money is the bottom line, but on the other hand - the host is only one cog in the clockwork that is IT - even if it does a poor job of keeping time. Bad IT = self solving users... which sucks for you, but you (as a user) are as much a risk to be running terrible evils on it as anyone. Does it live on a network that shares sensitive data? If you decide to put porn screensavers there, can they do anything about it (or if a hacker had privilege escalation basically) Think of your power if you become disgruntled? Or if it breaks, you may be technically saavy, but if that server grows to be business critical, and IT isn't even familiar with it.. bad things happen, the company can't prove anything in an audit about it, in fact, it may be a "you must remove this flag" to auditors. Better to work on the consumer relationship issues with IT, than on the wild west take matters into your own hands approach. You may pay for the car, but still gotta register it to use the roads. Smog checks, insurance, etc..

Waking a person unnecessarily should not be considered a capital crime. For a first offense, that is.
