The great State of Tennessee, the greenest State in the Land of the Free, has begun it's Lottery. One of the last States to do so.
Maybe next we will have State run Liquor stores, grocery stores, ammunition stores, gas stations, car dealerships, etc.
Horrible, it is just too horrible to dwell on.

a) optional
b) not progressive
so there's no 'soak the rich' factor involved. In fact, as it applies in the UK, lottery proceeds benefit the company contracted to run it and the arts, paid for by working-class gamblers who did not know better.

One of the stated objectives if the US federal and many State governments is to promote the arts. Taking the leap that an industry should be taken over by the government in order to promote the arts is going way too far. They will be contributing to "the arts" through the taxes they pay anyway, if they were "allowed" to operate privately.
It certainly is not the business of government to prop up charities.

Just because the government controls a business doesn't make the government "socialist." Nazi Germany, for example, had strict control of its corporations, but to label them as "Socialist" borders on lunacy. Strictly controlling industries for control's sake and cotrol
