Journal GMontag's Journal: Chicago Sun-Times slightly misquoted me 3

Perhaps the proper term is misformatted me?

highnumber, a frequent commenter at Reason noticed that a quote of mine made the Sun-Times:

BIG business
These folks made money in everything from media and real estate to coffee, dumplings and ethanol. Talk about corporate welfare!
Guy Montag, www.reason.com

Some meaning was lost in their formatting. The original:

these folks made money in everything from media and real estate to coffee, dumplings and ethanol.

Talk about corporate welfare!*

They managed to misquote Isaac Bartram too

Not sure if they picked up the Ariana Cha story from 2001 or not, so this is the first time I remember being in that paper I guess.

Edit 1309 12 March 2007: I still think this is the money quote.

*the original was Talk about government welfare! and the next post corrects it.

  • That's a tough one. It's not just that they dropped the bold; they also dropped that you were quoting someone else, highlighting a part of their quote, and responding to that part of it, and instead attributed the entire quote to you, including what was written by Forbes.

This is what I was originally going to say before I rechecked the context:

Next time, instead of bold, use strong. Bold is presentational; strong is meaningful. I'd argue they're within their rights to strip out presentational markup to m

I guess this shows that old media still doesn't get Internet culture. But you'd think they'd be more careful about laundering quotes from other old media.

Given their tendency to just make crap up [littlegreenfootballs.com] because they still think they can get away with it, it doesn't surprise me at all that they haven't yet gotten up to speed on Internet culture, netiquette, etc.
