Journal GMontag's Journal: David Bell of TNR Applauds President Bush
Many folks seem to be misreading the newspeak from professor David A. Bell, contributing editor for the New Republic in his L.A. Times story Was 9/11 really that bad?
First, let's look at how things go at TNR from the mind of seasoned writer Harold C. Hutchison: reporters just get assignments and the editors write whatever they like under the author's name, or something like that. As one of my English teachers from college (the most arrogant one on earth) said, the writer is the last person on earth who knows what his writings really mean, so allow me to decypher it for you.
As you all know too well, this happened to me, but now I know the code. No, don't gripe about another mention in the comments below, just move along.
Anyway, professor Bell (and his editorial overloards) tell us that during WWII the Soviets and FDR both had civilian and military deaths far in excess, by any measure over time, than President George W. Bush has had. Apparently the editorial doublespeak kicks in where professor Bell (and his editorial overloards) seem to lament (the untrained reader would take it that way) that we should wait until our current foes should be left alone until they have a Hitler like war machine to attack us with before we over react.
I am not reading this article in that way at all. It is obvious to the sophisticated reader that professor Bell (and his editorial overloards) wish is for us to kick some fundamentalist ass before they do any more damage to the USA, Great Britain, Israel or . . . (someone please think of another real Ally?)
So, Bully! to TNR, history professor Bell and his editorial overloards for bringing support to the troops and the mission in such an uplifting way!
