Journal GMontag's Journal: So tell me again about the "Black Community" and the GWoT?

So tell me again about the "Black Community" and the Global War on Terror?

Attending a Support the Troops gathering at the main gate of Walter reed Army Hospital last night, I noticed something pleasing. The drive-by black community was showing great support for The Free Republic members, orderly assembled to cheer the troops. The same support was defiantly not shown for the Code Pink folks.

Now, I did not approach the Code Pink crowd, they are too far from my views to even bother that night. Maybe sometime in the future I might walk by and chat, but not yet. The Free Republic folks are a good bit away from my views too, but at least they are on the same side as I am, but this post is not about my views on the war it is about support for the troops and the Global War on Terror.

I keep hearing that the "black community" is against the war. Hard to pin it down as I do not recall an article specifically about that, but I do keep hearing it from white Leftists. Yes, I do ask them for articles but they never seem to have any, to the extent of calling me stupid for not believing them. The only explanation that I can think of is people are dreaming statements of The Honorable Representative Rangel into imagined articles.

The honking of passing vehicles told a much different story.

Here on the East Coast, a general "hello, we support you" greeting is the honking of horns when passing by a demonstration. Waiving and "thumbs up" are other greetings of support. On that corner of Georgia Avenue, it was non-stop Sport Utility Vehicle driving black people honking and waiving when passing by The Free Republic gathering. I only heard a couple of honks, in two hours, down the street by Code Pink.

On the subject of SUVs, why do Leftists hate black folks so much? The predominant race driving them on Georgia Avenue last night was black. As a matter of fact, the woman I dated with the biggest truck is black and she drove an Explorer.

In and out of the gate and vehicles just passing by on the street (this is a major artery from DC to Maryland) the honks and waves, yelps and whistles showered The Free Republic folks. I even got choked up a couple of times.

Before the gathering, arriving a little too early, I parked up the street and checked out the area on foot. Asked a friendly, younger, black man what gate the Troop Supporters gather. He was very nice and pointed to the closest one. He also said that the "Troop haters" hang farther down the block. "The ones with all the pink stuff?" "Yea, those freaks."

Went back up the block, stopped in Charlie's(?) a bar up the street, to have a beer, wait for 6:30 and let a rainstorm pass. The folks in there were very nice. Yes, I was the closest thing to a "white guy" there and I was wearing a straw cowboy hat and yellow button-down shirt. The attractive bartender asked if I come in often and I aid no, I was waiting to join with the people by the Walter Reed gate to support the troops. She told me it was her first day there and the people I was going to be meeting were cool. She was glad that people were coming out to support the wounded soldiers.

When 6:30 arrived, the sky was crying much too hard for my 30X straw Serratelli, so I stayed for another beer. Near the front door I spoke briefly with the DJ, a well-spoken, well-dressed black fellow. I mentioned that I was just waiting for the rain to stop to go down the block and support the troops.

"Yea man! You guys are great coming out every Friday! How about that Zarqawi? We have the best troops ever!"

"Yea, I think it is great too. Too bad the media wants to turn it into an election conspiracy."

"Yea, they don't know anything about the military."

We shook hands, I went back to finish my last beer, that lasted just long enough for the rain to stop. When I got ready to leave the staff asked if they would see me next Friday, I gave them a big smile, a nod "yes" and headed down the street.

I suspect the chattering classes have never bothered to get out and meet the people who they chatter about. I mean the real people, not the "properly pigmented" sample at the Student Union that suits their slant on an idea or story.

Looking forward to more Fridays like yesterday.
