+ - Indian Public Examination (JEE) Unit Works in IE Only

Submitted by Anonymous Coward
An anonymous reader writes "The website of a major public examination unit in India works in IE only. This forces many millions of those aspiring for a career in engineering and sciences to use the evil Internet Explorer for basic tasks. The website in question is here. Various free software bodies in the country have sent a joint letter to the board. This common scenario is invariably accompanied by corruption at higher levels and involves corporates as an essential part of the process. So often no action is taken."
Piracy

+ - New study finds that music sales are not significantly affected by piracy.->

Submitted by HungryMonkey
HungryMonkey (1887382) writes "A report published by the European Commission Joint Research Centre claims that music web piracy does not harm legitimate sales.

Using clickstream data on a panel of more than 16,000 European consumers, we estimate the effects of illegal downloading and legal streaming on the legal purchases of digital music. Our results suggest that Internet users do not view illegal downloading as a substitute to legal digital music.

And in a big shocker, the IFPI claims the study is flawed.

IFPI believes the JRC study is flawed and misleading. The findings seem disconnected from commercial reality, are based on a limited view of the market and are contradicted by a large volume of alternative third party research that confirms the negative impact of piracy on the legitimate music business.

judgecorp writes "The Google Keep note-keeping app has had a frosty reception. Analysts including Gartner have said its functionality is laughable compared to that of the rival Evernote (saying "it’s like saying MSFT Paint is a threat to Photoshop") and other users have rejected it on the grounds that after the death sentence on Reader, Google can't be trusted not to pull the plug on a service which people have come to rely on."

Comment: BBC Quality? (Score -1, Troll) 129

Given the poor quality of falsehoods and propaganda from the BBC and like-minded western media, it is good news. E.g. http://www.countercurrents.org/vltchek170313.htm It is a good thing that the BBC account got hacked. It would be better if the BBC shuts down completely.

+ - Post "Good Google", Who Will Defend The Open Web?

Submitted by
psykocrime
psykocrime writes "The crazy kids at Fogbeam Labs have started a discussion about Google and their relationship with the Open Web, and questioning who will step up to defend these principles, even as Google seem to be abdicating their position as such a champion. Some candidates mentioned include Yahoo, IBM, Red Hat, Mozilla, Microsoft and The Wikimedia Foundation, among others. The question is, what organization(s) have BOTH the necessary clout and the required ethical principles, to truly champion the Open Web, in the face of commercial efforts which are clearly inimical to Open Source, Open Standards, Libre Culture and other elements of an Open Web?"
