Journal Ethelred Unraed's Journal: Qt4: The most important feature 13

In case you haven't heard, Qt version 4 has been released by Trolltech. You may have heard about the various new features in this version, along with the new free-as-in-beer version for Windows, but none of that is important.

What is important is that I did nearly all the icons for the Qt tools. Therefore, this version is immensely superior to any other software that has ever existed. Nay, now you need no other software than Qt4, as you sit in front of the monitor slack-jawed in awe at the incredible beauty of those icons.

Well, all right, you need some OS to run Qt on. But other than that, no other software is needed for you to live happily.

You may think I exaggerate. Perish the thought, ye of little faith!

Qt4: The most important feature

  • 1) did you also do the icons for the PDA version?
    2) has the QT/Mac been ported to Mactel, yet? :)

Yes, with some qualification. I did most of the ones that are in the default version, in many cases in various iterations and improved versions. However, the versions of Qtopia that are actually installed on (for example) Sharp's devices usually have icons done by someone else. The first Zaurus models had my icons (or at least the ones I had done at the time); more recent ones have (rather fugly, even if I am a bit biased) icons done by Sharp.

confession 1: I get totally geeked out that you do all the work you do with the trolltech folks. it may be a man crush. you've had fair warning.

confession 2: I just moved my mouse over some of the icons in the image you posted to see what tooltip would pop up- then realized it was a picture and that wasn't going to happen.

qt designer is a big part of why I'm so stoked about using qt. Don't want to start flameage but it kills glade. (just my opinion)

    allright- enough of that.

I'm warning you. I'm married, and my wife will kick your ass.

Though we could always meet in secret, kiss kiss.

Pretty good stuff, though. I've always found icon and other super small work to be surprisingly difficult. I'd almost rather create nested TABLEs with FONT tags in every TD than come up with a decent looking .ICO image.

It must be rather satisfying to be running Linux on your G5 tower and see your icons all the time, rather than have to look at some other schmuck's butchery.

I'm used to it. It's one of the drawbacks to being a designer, since design as a professional field is still not taken terribly seriously by most people. (Deep down, nearly everyone thinks that they can do just as well, because all they really need is Photoshop and a bit of spare time.)

I must say, though, that working with Trolltech is quite the breeze, because they generally do respect wh

    Smooth work!!

Finally, icons that are compatible with my eyes (i have a little problem distinguishing colors but can do fine with greyscales and shapes).

The only icon that IMHO needs a little work is the progress bar (too non-descriptive - at least in the screenshot, maybe put a '10%' or something in it?)

    Keep on your good work!

Thanks! FWIW my icons tend to look a bit old-school because I try to keep them high-contrast just for people like yourself, and try to make them as crisp as possible (i.e. mostly perpendicular and/or straight lines, less curves, harder edges). I used to have really heavy edges (see Aethera [thekompany.com] from theKompany.com in earlier releases, or see the Dillo [dillo.org] browser's default ico
