Journal CmdrTaco's Journal: Anime Fansubs 1

With the end of the mainstream television season, I am left with a hole in my life that can only be filled with more television. I've been slowly accumulating a mountain of fansubbed anime to watch this summer, and am really looking forward to watching it.

The fansubbing community is an interesting beast. Much crossover with the Open Source world- the passion is there. The egos. The opinions. But what blows me away is when I download a divx of a show, and realize that it aired only a matter of weeks ago in Japan. That is some serious dedication to your craft. And the scary thing is that I've seen a number of fansubs that equal or better the subtitles on the show when it is finally released on DVD.

Now one thing that frusterates me is that I've had a hard time finding websites that offer reviews of shows. Like AnimeFu does for anime DVDs. I don't really need all that much information- if there was a plot synopsis, and perhaps 2 or 3 different people wrote if they liked the show or not, that would be sufficient. Else I'm often blindly stabbing (downloading?) in the dark. Pulling down shows almost at random. It's not so bad- if the first episode sucks, I just won't download more. But there is so much bad anime out there, I wish I could find a way to know what's the best of the shows out in fansub.

And I would also like to add that West Wing season 1 is out on DVD in the UK. Why is it that they get a show about OUR government (sorta) before us? Cruel cruel world!

The lust for a 17" Powerbook continues to grow within me.

Seven words: "Futuristic backlit keyboard with ambient light sensor." That alone.... ;) But the rest [apple.com] is pretty spiffy, too. I'm thinking of getting one to replace my home desktop box whenever I get around to doing that.
