Journal BlackHat's Journal: ...and find the broom. 6
Getting this out late today.
Commentary:
Why is there so much pressure to keep Korea from being unified? Look at post "Wall" Germany. Thomas Friedman in the NYT said it like this "Japan alone cannot handle China, Japan alone cannot handle a unified Korea, and Japan alone cannot protect its own sealanes--so for all these reasons we[I assume he implies USA+Japan+China] need the U.S. alliance." It is quite true that Japan cannot handle the duties of patroling the sealanes. That was already shown in part 17 of the First World War (aka WWII).

I try to keep up with Korean issues at least somewhat. Lived there for a couple of years when I was young, my younger sister was adopted from there, and it's a beautiful country that will always have a place in my heart even decades later and half the globe away.
I know that there's pressure on the South Korean government to push towards reunification, and that the most recent president of South Korea won on a platform of peacemaking.

Wow, how things keep changing. When I was a "kid" in my Advanced Cource, circa 1988, the deal was that the US reduced presance was keeping the South Koreans from forcing reunificatiion by invasion.

You're right, times keep changing. There's quite a generational divide, by my understanding. Most of those in the older generation that remembers the war like Americans. But the number of those in the younger generation that doesn't share those memories is growing, and they don't hold quite the level of appreciation for our presence. Everyone I remember meeting (I was only about 10) was friendly, but then, it could have been just that blond-haired blue

No, I said it exactly right for the post-Carter South Koreans of the 1980's.
