Terry Pratchett Knighted

Submitted by ackthpt
ackthpt writes "Headlines have been popping up on Google News, again abruptly yanked from news servers, such as Times Online and International Herald Tribune. A Google News snippet for The Times Online states, "Terry Pratchett declared himself "flabbergasted" to receive a knighthood as he led a group of writers, actors and performers honoured today." The Discworld author and stalwart adversary of Alzheimers Disease has been a member of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for Services to Literature since 1998. He will be entering the new year as Knight Commander. Well done and Oook, Sir Terry."

Eve Online Client Source Code Leaked 368

Posted by ScuttleMonkey
from the shoot-first-ask-questions-later dept.
An anonymous reader writes to tell us that the game client source code for the popular MMO, Eve Online, has been leaked via torrent. In addition to the source code the user also posted a lengthy chat transcript with someone from CCP customer support. While the end goal may have been to call attention to the continuing security issues within Eve (and ultimately themselves), there are probably better ways of getting through to support. Unfortunately, CCP seems to be responding with the usual knee-jerk reaction of banning everyone breathing a whisper of this incident. I wonder if any large MMO company will ever be brave enough to calmly address an issue rather than wielding the ban-hammer.

HTC TyTN II PDA Phone lacks video performance 3

Submitted by
Anton Nilsson
Anton Nilsson writes "Taiwaneese PDA giant HTC released their latest flagship PDA phone called HTC TyTN II (also known as Kaiser, Tilt and MDA Vario III) but recent discoveries show that maybe it's not so much a powerhouse after all. Due to lack of proper driver support for the video part of the Qualcomm MSM7200 chipset users are left with a seriously handicapped unit with very poor support for gaming, video and photo. Granted, the phone is mostly intended for business users who will rarely see the effects of these issues but it's still leaving thousands of customers who want to fully utilize the phone with a slightly bitter taste in their mouths.

A petition for driver support has been posted and almost 4000 people have signed it. It has been sent to HTC on numerous occasions yet when contacted HTC still claims to be unaware of any such issues.

You can check out the petition here:

Potential buyers of this much hyped set beware until these issues are resolved."

Will the BBC chose DRM over 25% of its users?

Submitted by
Placid
Placid writes "When I stumbled across a Linux Journal post regarding the BBC and its on-demand video format choice, it got me thinking, and indeed grinding. As a non-Windows user (Debian GNU/Linux by choice — Mac users are affected too however) and a keen fan and user of the BBC and its services, why am I being ignored by the great institution that is the BBC? What was my immediate Web 2.0 response to my frustration? I blogged about it.
What are your opinions on this matter? Will you use BBC on-demand services, what's more — will the choice of format (namely Windows Media with DRM) sway your decision? Do you think the BBC will lose its well-earned respect from the IT community?"

If you flaunt it, expect to have it trashed.
