A number of the community leaders from the OpenSolaris community have
been working quietly together on a new effort called Illumos, and we're
just about ready to fully disclose our work to, and invite the general
participation of, the general public.

We believe that everyone who is interested in OpenSolaris should be
interested in what we have to say, and so we invite the entire
OpenSolaris community to join us for a presentation on at 1PM EDT on
August 3, 2010.

You can find out the full details of how to listen in to our conference,
or attend in person (we will be announcing from New York City) by

Going along with this comments's logic and the quote from the original post, I've found that users can be trained to hit the print screen button when they get a message they don't care about. We've got Printscreen 2000 installed all over the place, which makes it much closer to a one-click solution than the Windows default. They get a screenshot and keep doing what they're doing. I get the error message.

anzha writes "Do you remember being a kid and told we'd never know what colors the dinosaurs were? For at least some, that's no longer true. Scientists working in the UK and China have closely examined the fossils of multiple theropods and actually found the colors and patterns that were present in the fossilized proto-feathers. So far, the answer is orange, black and white in banded and other patterns. The work also thoroughly thrashes the idea that fossils might not be feathers, but collagen fibers instead. If this holds up, Birds Are Dinosaurs. Period. And colorful!"

Users of the service have just begun to see banners stating, 'Starting June 30, Avantgo will no longer offer mobile web content.' According to parent company Sybase, AvantGo will transition from a mobile web service, to an SMS advertising and content delivery system."

Zotac's Ion-Based Mini-ITX Board For Atom Debuts 106

MojoKid writes "There have been a handful of NVIDIA Ion-based products with Intel's Atom processor that have been unveiled recently, ranging from NVIDIA's own reference system, to the Acer Aspire Revo SFF PC. Today Zotac announced an Ion motherboard that will be appealing to the DIY crowd. The design of this IONITX-A model board tested and reviewed here in particular, offers some very interesting features, not the least of which is its DC power input with an external power brick. It also is built on Intel's dual core Atom process for a bit more horsepower to back up NVIDIA's Ion integrated graphics chip."

Jyms writes "As technology changes, so hubs routers and switches are upgraded, but does the cabling need replacing, and if so, how often? Coax gave way to CAT 5 and CAT 5e replaced that. If you are running a 100Mbit/s network on old CAT 5, can that affect performance? Do CAT 5(e) cables get old?"

candl writes: Ethiopia has mobilized its media, schools, judicial and law enforcement agencies, as well as commercial, cultural, artistic and scientific groups to press home the need for intellectual property (IP) protection to develop the country's economy. Basically, they're starting a PR campaign against piracy, but the line that caught my attention was this: With regard to the Ethiopian music industry, the association of recording companies agreed to lower the prices of compact discs of original recordings from $15 to $2.50. The price reduction took away much of the incentive to produce pirated compact discs, which cost about $1.10.

An anonymous reader writes: As Apple launches its iPhone, a company attempting to build a similar touchscreen-based phone around an open, user-extensible Linux OS has acknowledged significant delays. OpenMoko now hopes to ship its first "mass market" model in October, according to the leader of the project, which is spinning out as a separate company from Taiwanese OEM/ODM giant FIC. All of OpenMoko.com's phones will reportedly be unlocked GSM/GPRS devices, and will run a user-modifiable Linux-based OS maintained by OpenMoko.org, an open source project sponsored largely by FIC to date.

We're all over that, and internally we have already played a lightsaber game on the Wii. It's a lot of fun, and we'll get there.
Hopefully it's more like Jedi Academy than Jedi Power Battles.

I was going to give props to streamsicle too, but I see I'm now just another 'ME TOO.' Streamsicle + Winamp is a hoot and ultra easy. Bandwidth is an issue but there are work arounds. (May sound obvious, but Streamsicle doesn't have any built in throttling, just does a 128 bitstream) Check the forums for tweaks.
