Hate speech is not illegal in the United States. That's a European policy not an American one.

Whilst there are fewer hate speech laws in the US, I'd guess there are more laws restricting speech against the government, ie sedition. "Seditious Conspiracy" is planning on bringing down the US government. No violence is necessary.

The hate speech laws in the UK are rarely used. I absolutely agree with you that they should not have been passed. What's interesting is that they were passed in order to protect minorities (in theory), and a disproportionate number of people prosecuted with them have been minorities.

No, Google collects data about people. That's how they can get a relevant search when you search for someone's name. It's not metadata, it's just data about individual people.

That being said, I don't think it should be the responsibility of google to filter their data based on individual requests. It's really difficult to do, and the only reason they're complying is because the EU is a huge market.

When people attack synagogues.... that's against the law, already. When people actually encourage people to kill Jews, that's already against the law. I'm not sure how them being anonymous or not online would affect the attack on the synagogue.

Very, very few people are actually anonymous online now. It's pretty easy to track most people down.

Words have an impact.

In the case of bullying it has led to multiple deaths. In the case of terrorist advocacy, it has led to repeated violent/racist protests that has led to countless people getting hurt and in some cases dying. No one should have the right to advocate violence against all members of an ethnic group. Just look at what's happening in France.

The thing is that not allowing people to speak their mind leads to everyone living in fear. Bullying will happen to some extent, and I think real life is way way more important than the internet.

There are also loads of things that are worth some deaths. I'm not saying that this is one, but the ability to live free of the government controlling every part of my life is one. A million kids having lots more fun, and one dying, is a good trade off in my opinion.

These blades are highly regulated. When Oscar Pistorius lost in the 200m paralympic amputee final in London in 2012, he had a rant about the length of the blades of his opponent. It's well known that long blades give an advantage over legs, hence the regulation.

One of the major problems, in this and many other articles is that there is a blanket assumption that all of this abuse is coming from men, even in the case of anonymous posts. This is straight up sexism. All of the abuse here is assumed to be the work of men.

Before you say that it is always men, there was a similar incident of excessive abuse directed towards a female MP campaigning against a woman being removed from the 5 pound note in the UK. Two people were prosecuted, one of them was a woman (Isabella Sorley).

I am against prosecutions for online abuse, I'm just using this as an example that it is not always men who abuse, even in situations where it would seem unlikely that it is a woman. Assuming anonymous hate mail is always written by men is wrong and sexist.

You do know the US has "Stop and Identify" laws which require you to talk to police? For example, in Texas :

"A person commits an offense if he intentionally refuses to give his name, residence address, or date of birth to a peace officer who has lawfully arrested the person and requested the information."

It's a class C misdemeanor.

Someone has to drive trucks, and driving trucks well is difficult. If you make only expert truck drivers allowed to drive, then you'll have a whole host of goods undelivered. Sometimes you've got to use what you've got.

The biggest problem truck drivers have on the road, besides the ones that are just a danger to themselves and others all the time, is lack of sleep.

Well, I'm from the EU, which has mandatory time limits on HGV driving and working. You can't work more than 48 hours a week as a driver, on average (the actual legislation is that you can't work more than 56 hours in a week, and no more than 96 hours in a fortnight, IIRC). If you're tired with that week, it's your fault.
