Submission + - Apple Facility In Mesa Caught Fire (abc15.com)

jones_supa writes: Officials are on scene of a second-alarm-level fire at the Apple Inc. data center in Mesa. The Mesa Fire Department said that the fire is located near Elliot and Signal Butte Roads in east Mesa. The fire appeared to be on solar panels on the roof of the building over a loading dock. Thick black smoke could be seen raising from the roof. Crews dispatched from multiple locations worked together and knocked the fire down in half an hour. The fire did not appear to be burning inside the building itself, officials said. For now it is unclear what started the fire. A dozen of people had to be evacuated, but there are no reports of any injuries.

An anonymous reader writes: In the aftermath of the derailment of an Amtrak train in Philidelphia a couple weeks ago, the company has caved to demands that it install video cameras to monitor and record the actions of the engineers driving their trains. The National Transportation Safety Board has been recommending such cameras for the past five years. Amtrak CEO Joe Boardman says the cameras will improve train safety, though the engineers' union disagrees. In 2013, the union's president said, "Installation of cameras will provide the public nothing more than a false sense of security. More than a century of research establishes that monitoring workers actually reduces the ability to perform complex tasks, such as operating a train, because of the distractive effect."

jones_supa writes: The clothing and music retailer Hot Topic is buying Geeknet for $117.3 million. Geeknet, the firm behind the legendary establishments SourceForge and VA Linux, is currently the parent company for ThinkGeek and ThinkGeek Solutions. ThinkGeek sells clothing, toys, gadgets and other products mostly based on popular movies, television shows and brands with geek appeal. ThinkGeek Solutions is a distributor of video-game themed merchandise through licensed web stores. Hot Topic Inc. will pay $17.50 per Geeknet share. Privately held Hot Topic, based in Los Angeles, has more than 650 stores in the U.S. and Canada. Geeknet will become a Hot Topic subsidiary.

The problem is that they don't notice their privacy being compromised during the daily use of the service. Maybe they will see some tailored advertisements but that's it. If they would get a detailed report about what information is pulled from their messages and how it is used, then maybe they would change their minds about using the service. All the datamining happens quietly in the background. It's a discreet man-in-the-middle operation.

jones_supa writes: A huge batch of work-in-progress assets for Star Citizen have leaked to the public. An unknown person, likely connected with Cloud Imperium Games in some way, provided a link to the 48 gigabytes of content. The link has now been taken down, but as we know, it's hard to remove material from Internet after once put there. Being a CryEngine game, it has been suggested that it might be possible to view some of the assets using CryEngine development tools. Leaks are always quite the conundrum with the opportunities they present to curious fans and competitor companies, but can also be very depressing for the developers and publisher of the game.
