Microsoft intended Windows Solitaire "to soothe people intimidated by the operating system", and at a time where many users were still unfamiliar with graphical user interfaces, it proved useful in familiarizing them with the use of a mouse, such as the drag-and-drop technique required for moving cards.

At least part of the issue falls on the fact that the Win9x line was built as a single-user system. When XP (based on NT/2K) came along and replaced 9x, if they had forced non-admin accounts, all sorts of programs designed for 9x would be very confused when they found out they couldn't write to certain places.

So, part of the problem is users, part is lazy developers, and part is Microsoft not providing a solution to allow legacy apps to run with restricted rights, without modification

Actually, Entourage* in my situation has one advantage over Outlook. My school's email is Exchange, and the only way to access it is over Outlook Web Access. Entourage hooks in to it (and my other email accounts) no problem. On the other hand, I've been totally unable to get Outlook to do the same.

*Evolution also supported this, but it's not compatible with Exchange '07.

Submission + - Dark Matter and Superconductivity (lanl.gov)

Philip Sargent writes: "A paper which appeared on arXiv today proposes that certain characteristics of dark matter can be detected in laboratory experiments.

Coincidentally, these tests involve the rotating superconductors much beloved by antigravity afficionados.

"Recent laboratory experiments with rotating superconductors show that three so far unexplained experimentally observed effects (anomalous acceleration signals, anomalous gyroscope signals, Cooper pair mass excess) can be physically explained in terms of a possible interaction of dark energy with Cooper pairs..."

"We show that this model can account simultaneously for the anomalous acceleration and anomalous gravitomagnetic fields around rotating superconductors measured by Tajmar et al. and for the anomalous Cooper pair mass in superconductive Niobium, measured by Cabrera and Tate. It is argued that these three different physical effects are ultimately different experimental manifestations of the simultaneous spontaneous breaking of gauge invariance, and of the principle of general covariance in superconductive materials." http://xxx.lanl.gov/abs/0707.1797"

Software

Submission + - Kqemu is GPL.

Anonymous Coward writes: "Yesterday Frabrice Bellard released the full virtualization module kqemu for qemu under the GPL. This makes it possible for the first time to have full virtualization on old CPU's without using proprietary software. If kqemu is included in the Linux kernel then linux users will have this capability "out of the box" (qemu itself is already in the standard repositories)."

Submission + - programmed code - yours or the company's?

markybob writes: "While working for my current employer, I do a lot in my job (small company), from basic network setup to programming. At the end of the day, since I never signed any kind of licensing agreement or copyright transfer, I am still the owner of my code, even if I allow the company to use it, correct? If I leave the company, could I reasonably use that code for whatever purposes I fit, even if selling my code to someone else or asking my old company to license it if they wish to keep using it? How would other Slashdotters handle this situation?"
