Comment Science vs Politics not vs Religion (Score 1) 900

I think the real problem is politics. Special interests lead to some very stupid political decisions based on the "this is going to save the planet" meme. Ethanol made from food as a fuel comes to mind. People claiming to be environmentalists commit terrorism, criminal acts, and run scams for personal profit. Many "researchers" start out with their results already decided for economic reasons. A lowering of ethical standards in exchange for wealth or power. I don't advocate religion of any kind but I care about my family, community, country and fellow human beings so I believe it is wrong to harm them for profit. Do science honestly, report results honestly and keep it as far away from politicians as possible. There is no "good" political party.

The real problem with nuclear power is something everyone understands -- namely, people's ability for sloth and cheapness. A properly constructed and maintained nuclear reactor can be exceedingly safe. The problem is, those that run said plants will cut corners everywhere -- construction, maintenance, etc. -- and when they do, the consequences can be huge.

I totally agree, having spent most of my 25 year US Navy career serving aboard nuclear powered submarines I have no problem living in the same ship as those 60's design reactors. The training and quality assurance programs that were required when I was on active duty insured safe operation.

Bullshit. Let's place blame where blame is due. What screwed America is the unions.

Oh please. If you want to build stuff in America without paying union wages, it's easy: you build your factory in Alabama or Mississippi or Tennessee. That's exactly what a bunch of foreign automakers have done, while American automakers have been building factories in Mexico. There's nothing forcing you to use union labor; this has only been a major factor in northeast states. There's a LOT more to the country than just the northeast.

Have you not heard about the aircraft plant Boeing built in South Carolina and promptly got hit with union and NLRB litigation. BS indeed

My observations of the way things work on this "little blue dot" is that mother nature has her own ways of limiting overpopulation of the various species. Famine, disease, natural disasters, and wars are just a few of her obvious tools. Of course there is always the possibility that we could become one gigantic nuclear mass suicide.

I would LOVE to be throttled! That would mean I actually maintained connection long enough to use the data at a high speed to be in the top x% of users.

Counting down my last month until I switch to Verizon...

You won't be happy with Verizon either. I hated their (lack of) service so bad I switched to Alltel when my contract with them expired. Verizon then bought Alltel just to show me they were not through screwing me.

Submission + - Iranian cyber army strikes again -- hitting VoA (techworld.com.au)

angry tapir writes: "The pro-Iran hacktivist group that defaced the Baidu and Twitter Web sites a year ago has hit another target: the U.S. Government's Voice of America news site. Voice of America was knocked offline temporarily after hackers were able to change the organization's DNS (Domain Name System) settings, redirecting Web traffic hitting Voice of America sites to another site controlled by the hackers."

Comment Need to Read FCC Rules (Score 1) 393

The FCC's net neutrality rules were an attempt to circumvent congress and a power grab by FCC chairman Julius Genachowski. It would have allowed the cable companies to package internet the way they now package TV (Are you happy with your 200 channels of infomercials?). This was opposed by many people from both parties not just republicans. Even Sen Al Franken (D) was very critical of these FCC rules. This has nothing to do with the net neutrality that opposes govt controls and censorship.

Why would anyone want the government to decide that scientific exploration in a particular area is a worthy pursuit? There is no justification for tax revenue being spent on science because private enterprise can achieve more faster and cheaper than government sponsored boondoggles. Look how much money they have wasted on programs like ethanol corn subsidies and fusion power. Private energy science is far more efficient and productive. Don't even get me started on electric cars.

The company has been Linux-friendly from the very start; it released advanced GPU benchmarks (Heaven, Tropics, Sanctuary) for Linux before and is working on the OilRush strategy game that supports Linux as well."
