Just a quick note; in my experience, courses from The Teaching Company don't really teach as much as actual college courses. Being enrolled in a university and watching or listening to TTC lectures on the side gives me a fair basis for comparison, I feel.

They might be equivalent to 100 or 200 level courses, but the lack of interactivity is a huge handicap to learning through TTC lectures.

Submission + - How to best emulate Cable TV on a PC for dad? 1

sunwolf writes: "My first Ask /. comes from a dire need to cut costs. Comcast has now shifted to charging in liters of blood for its Triple Play (cable tv/internet/phone) axis of necessary evils, and I would like to move to an internet-only model. The only thing keeping me from doing so is that my dad has rarely ever touched a computer, and I would prefer the transition to be as simple as possible for him. To that end I've planned a computer that uses: the tv screen via HDMI, the Wiimote as a pointing device, and a cheap wacom tablet for input, so he doesn't need to learn to use the mouse and keyboard. Even with these improvements, though, the ease of channel surfing is, afaik, unmatched on PCs.

What is the best way to emulate this experience on a PC?"

They really are missing out on a huge demographic by banning the Kama Sutra. Imagine the utility of a touchscreen, vibrating smartphone that can display the kama sutra while it's at it.

They are one and the same!
