Submission + - Plasma-Based Life possible? 1

An anonymous reader writes: According to Space.com, Researchers from Germany's Max Planck Institute have created a computer model demonstrating that microscopic dust-particles injected into low-temperature plasmas spontaneously self-organize into crystalline structures resembling DNA and other biological structures. Team member V.N. Tsytovich states "These complex, self-organized plasma structures exhibit all the necessary properties to qualify them as candidates for inorganic living matter."

No word yet on how this discovery might affect Human-Klingon relations.

Submission + - Internet's about to be stolen by pirates in Norway (ajaxwidgets.com)

polterguy writes: "Telenor the biggest ISP in Norway is no longer neutral towards content providers. Their excuse is that some content providers uses too much bandwidth. This path will lead to censorship and monopoly in content which again leads to monopoly in ideas and opinions as we saw from the Radio censoring in the 20th Century. I think this might be the most important debate to have since the end of the second world war in 1945, but most of the big media corporations in Norway are silencing this. Probably because they hope to become that _one_ provider of content and thereby adds and revenue on the net further down the road. Freedom of internet in Norway threatened — Piracy of Telenor"

Submission + - Job or PhD : Factors for passing out Post Grads.

Gaura writes: "I have completed 4th year of engg, (one more year of the dual PG degree) remains.(in EE, IIT Kgp India). I can get a proper job from here quite easily in the core area, but I also have an option to go for PhD program to US Univs. I want to know the different factors on which this decision shd be based (of couse the basic one is 'interest' but I am quite unbiased to these two things), CGPA (scoring system scale here) is also manageable (7.24). My mind also says that do a job for a couple of years then go overseas through job, work over there and then join PhD later, (coz. of interest in higher tech. education) So, please give suggestive tips for choosing the direction of things for me ,that it is most suitable/rewarding to me. Help.!! :-)"

Submission + - Aggregate Computing and Linux Community

ess writes: "I'm looking for a way to get involved in figuring out a way to get individual casual users involved in some aspect of Linux development. I don't have anything but the most remedial coding abilities, but I do want to be able to contribute to the cause. Is there any discussion of a way to get users like me involved in something more than helping design theme ideas? How about collecting statistics voluntarily based on my daily habits for the greater good? This is something I know many Linux users would gladly do if they thought the information would be used some way that benefits them. It just seems like in this day and age, when Window and Google are the kings of discreet information, we can go further than a wiki or a message board, especially with a voluntary force that wants to help."

Submission + - Have Linux, Will Travel? 1

qw0ntum writes: Next week I'm traveling to the Middle East, and this time I'm planning on bringing my Ubuntu-running laptop with me. However, this will be the first time my laptop will have traveled with me outside the country. I hope everything will work fine; my biggest concern is that I won't be able to get an internet connection, since the last time I was there pretty much all that was available was dialup access, which I've never had occasion to test here in the states. My question to the /. community is, have you ever experienced any unpleasant surprises with your computers while traveling abroad? Any tips for ensuring a smooth trip with a working laptop?

Submission + - NYT Sunday Editorial Calls for Withdrawl from Iraq (nytimes.com) 1

mdsolar writes: "In it's main Sunday editorial called "The Road Home" The NYT has called for the withdrawal of US forces from Iraq. Saying that the situation cannot be worse than it is now they argue that six months is needed to withdraw troops, perhaps through Turkey. They call for bases in Kuwait or Kurdish territory to continue to stage raids on terrorists who have gained a foothold in Iraq as a result of the war. They call on Kuwait and Saudi Arabia to host refugees with the US and EU to foot the bill but those Iraqis who have worked for us to be offered permanent resettlement in the US. They now call the war unnecessary and reiterate that it's management has been incompetent. They say that Bush is just trying to pass the disaster on to the next President and he must be prevented from doing this.

The (subscription) column by Frank Rich goes on at length calling Bush a coward.

With republican Senators defecting, can the Times have put it's finger in the wind or has it left the real stuff of its reputation bleaching behind it in the sun?"
