The webcomic community in particular has long felt slighted by the application of Wikipedia's contentious Notability policy. Wikinews reporters have recently begun investigating this issue, but are the admins listening? Is Deletionism becoming a dominant ethos on Wikipedia? Are the right people holding the reigns?"

An anonymous reader writes: In a new filing with the USPTO on 28 March Amazon has submitted 32 wikipedia articles to try and defend its one-click patent which is being re-examined by the USPTO in a case brought by Peter Calveley . This heavy use of Wikipedia by Amazon raises the question of whether a "website that anyone can edit" should be used as evidence. Calveley points out on his blog that in August, the USPTO acknowledged that it had taken Wikipedia off its list of acceptable research sources . Amazon also submitted a patent that Cordance Corporation is currently suing Amazon for infringing.

wattsup writes: "The USGS Reports that a magnitude 8.0 earthquake occurred at 20:39:56 (UTC) in the Solomon Islands. Police and residents said a wave about 10 feet high struck the western town of Gizo, inundating buildings and causing widespread destruction. A man who answered the telephone at the Gizo police station said there were initial reports that eight people, six of them children, had been killed by the tsunami. Gizo, a regional center, is just 25 miles from the earthquake's epicenter.

Australia to Hawaii went on high alert from the Pacific Tsunami Center for several hours after the quake struck between the islands of Bougainville and New Georgia, though officials canceled a region-wide tsunami warning after the danger period passed."

Stock market swings come and go but it is interesting that the sudden drop in the stock market is the result of a computer glitch. According to MSNBC, the computers running were not properly calculating trades. This led to the switch to a backup system which led to several seconds delay which impacted the Dow. Even now after the close of the market spokesmen for the NYSE Group Inc. could not confirm if all closing share prices were even valid."

One Salient Oversigh writes: "I have been able to use Ogg Vorbis files on my iRiver Digital Music Player and easily access it via my Linux o/s (Kubuntu 6.10). iRiver is one of the few companies that have produced players capable of playing Ogg Vorbis sound files, and all that is needed to make the player Linux-friendly is a change of firmware. If anyone is interested in how I was able to do this, check out my story on my blog. Are there others out there who thought they were disenfranchised by the Window-centricity of MP3 players?"

The issue has started to grate on some users. The report examined 100,000 commercial hard drives, ranging from 80GB to 400GB in capacity, used at Google since 2001. From the article: "The report also looked at the impact of scan errors — problems found on the surface of a disc — on hard drive failure. "We find that the group of drives with scan errors are 10 times more likely to fail than the group with no errors," said the authors. They added: "After the first scan error, drives are 39 times more likely to fail within 60 days than drives without scan errors."

clockinreverse writes: "The creator of the webcomic Starslip Crisis recently tried to prove that the editors of Wikipedia were biased agianst webcomics by attempting to delete his own strip. In doing so he discovered that the editors were striking votes of people who were cheating by using multiple accounts and voting "keep", but were not striking the votes of his own multiple accounts that were voting to delete."
