"The best new feature of Vista, and it really, really is a nice one, is the instant Start Menu search. You can be SO fast at starting programs or finding files by just hitting the Windows key and typing the first few letters... However, these are things that can be added to XP

For years I'd loved adding an address bar to my XP Taskbar. You'd just unlock the Taskbar, double its width, and enable the Address toolbar. You had instant program and URL launch available, and an added bonus was your clock now also displayed day and date since you fattened the Taskbar. Then I installed XP SP3 and damned if the bastards didn't totally disable this option. I'm so pissed.

That Microsoft Office only beats OOo by a factor of 10. I'm not being facetious -- That is a really good chunk for OOo! For the record, I removed MS Office from over 100 lab computers in my organization last year in favor of OOo. I'm also strongly urging staff to use OOo for at least a month. If, after that, they still insist on MS Office, I get it for them. Sadly, most opt for MS. Blows my mind, especially given the fact that the differences between Office 97/2000/xp/2003 and OOo are small compared to the differences between Office 97/2000/xp/2003 and Office 2007.

Submission + - Science close to unveiling invisible man

bensafrickingenius writes: From the Times Online http://technology.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/tech_and_web/article4494440.ece, scientists have engineered a material that can bend visible light around objects. The breakthrough could lead to systems for rendering anything from people to large objects, such as tanks and ships, invisible to the eye — although this is still years off. The world's two leading scientific journals, Science and Nature, are expected to report the results this week.

Submission + - Creative Commons licence Version 3.0 released

liquidat writes: "Creative Commons hast released the newest version of their licences, version 3.0. Among the changes you will find a new generic licence which is based on international laws instead of the US copyright like the former generic licence was. Also a by-sa compatibility list was created to make it possible to mix content under by-sa with content under another, but compatible licence. And last but not least, Debian and MIT should be happy now as well. You can find more detailed information at Creative Commons Version 3.0 Licenses A Brief Explanation."

Submission + - Google HD failure report, high temps/usage

An anonymous reader writes: The impact of heavy use and high temperatures on hard disk drive failure may be overstated, says a report by three Google engineers. The report examined 100,000 commercial hard drives, ranging from 80GB to 400GB in capacity, used at Google since 2001. From the article: "The report also looked at the impact of scan errors — problems found on the surface of a disc — on hard drive failure. "We find that the group of drives with scan errors are 10 times more likely to fail than the group with no errors," said the authors. They added: "After the first scan error, drives are 39 times more likely to fail within 60 days than drives without scan errors."

Submission + - HP voids warrenty if linux is installed

ShadowHywind writes: Having Hardware failures, I decided to call the HP tech support for help. They asked If i Had any other operating System installed, other then Windows. Because I duel boot, I said yes, I have linux and windows installed. He then quickly stated that If you install another operating system other then Windows, It will void your warranty. I quickly hung up the phone hoping that he wouldn't create a file sense i am working on month 4 of 3 years of my warranty. Is it right for a company to void a warranty just because you decide to install something other then windows?

Journal Journal: new article on camshaft advance vs mpg

just finished doing what should have been a simple experiment, figuring out what the best position to set your camshaft to get the best mileage possible.

article is not that exciting since anyone that cares about mileage has probably already figured out advancing the cam slightly will give better bottom end power and better mileage. But, it is still interesting to get some halfway decent numbers.

Submission + - Amanda Marcotte resigns from Edwards Campaign

duckintheface writes: Super-blogger Amanda Marcotte (of Pandagon.net fame) resigned today from her position with the John Edwards for President campaign under pressure from right-wing groups who objected to her personal views. http://www.pandagon.net/ Marcotte submitted her resignation because she felt that "every time I coughed, I was risking the Edwards campaign". Marcotte is famous for her biting feminist wit and insight into the way the religious right slams free speech. The line that brought her down? In a discussion of Catholic teachings on birth control, she asked rhetorically, "What if Mary had taken Plan B after the Lord filled her with his hot, white, sticky Holy Spirit?"

Submission + - Navy to use dolphins for antiterrorism

FR007 writes: Dozens of dolphins and sea lions trained to detect and apprehend waterborne attackers could be sent to patrol a military base in Washington state, the Navy said Monday. In a notice published in this week's Federal Register, the Navy said it needs to bolster security at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor, on the Puget Sound close to Seattle. The base is home to submarines, ships and laboratories and is potentially vulnerable to attack by terrorist swimmers and scuba divers, the notice states. Several options are under consideration, but the preferred plan would be to send as many as 30 California sea lions and Atlantic Bottlenose dolphins from the Navy's Marine Mammal Program, based in San Diego.
