the point of security theatre is to give the impression that something is being done. this is important because there is a high level of dependence on air travel. if people are too afraid to use air travel because of potential threats it would mean airlines could not maintain their business model. from a government point of view, apart from having to bail out said airlines financially, there is also a business need to keep people flying so that global business may continue to expand limitlessly until the limit is hit.

not to mention that i also just looked at their bios and larson-green has worked at microsoft for 19 years and sinofsky 23 years. these are not jobs where you send in your resume and a cover letter about how good you are.

we are in trouble if we start thinking that slashdot article's departments actually mean something other than the editor doing their best to coin a witticism.

as if the schools these guys went to makes a difference? their skills are learned from experience working in the industry and their value is in using their judgement based on that experience to make the best choices.

some things don't change once they take hold. postage stamps. passports. credit cards. social security numbers. things that identify individuals. the powers that be see it as necessary that you are uniquely identifiable online the same as in the real world. as for facebook fading like myspace? Facebook has a billion users. 1/6th of the worlds population. myspace at its peak had 100 million. that is what i would call post critical mass.

i can't wait until facebook is attached to birth certificates.
