Submission + - Hack a PS3 web server to win one

gamer4Life writes: LinuxWorld reports that the web host Shimpinomori is holding a challenge for everyone to hack into their web site hosted by a Sony PlayStation 3. According to the web site, the hack must be "clean" (no DDOS attacks). The operator of the site, Augustin Vidovic, expects the PS3 to be "much harder to crack" because it uses the Cell processor which protects against buffer overflows. The first person to do the job wins the PS3 which includes a 160 GB hard drive, Fedora Core 5, and Resistance Fall of Man.

Submission + - Grey goo attack forces Second Life offline

gamer4Life writes: CBC reports that Second Life has been taken offline by attackers using a method known as a "Grey goo attack — inserting self-replicating objects whose rate of growth forces the system's computers to spend most of their time creating the items. The attack leaves little to no processing power to handle normal operations, such as drawing people's characters and updating their movements through the three-dimensional world.

According to the official Second Life blog, log-ins will be closed to all except Linden staff while they finish cleaning up the aftermath of the grey goo attack.

Submission + - PS3 allows hard drive upgrade

anonymous writes: Daily Tech reports that the PS3 will allow their owners to upgrade their hard drive. From the article:

Sony is making things a bit easier for gamers with its PlayStation 3. Sony encourages its customers to upgrade their hard drives and even gives them instructions on how to do so in the PS3 user manual. The HDD used in the PS3 is a standard 2.5" SATA unit, so just about any drive should work should you crave more storage space.
Seems like good design decision on Sony's part. With the ability to run Yellow Dog Linux, the PS3 really seems a lot like a PC. Perhaps we can write it off as a business expense?
