Your post makes me crazy!
"Strategic board games ("eurogames")": Eurogames are strategy board games done in a European style. There is also an American style and you can often tell the difference pretty quickly. Basically, Eurogames are a sub genre of strategy board games. They are deffinitly not the same thing.
"Settlers of Catan, you've probably heard about, but that was just the game which enabled the genre; honored for it, but otherwise left behind as a deeply flawed example of what a truly strategic board game should be"
Well for starters strategy board games were an established genre since at least the 70's while settlers came out in the 90's I beleive. The one thing that Settlers did was to bring a strategy board game to the masses that is both easily accessible and contains a reasonable amount of strategic planning. It's a great starting point for these games. As for it being deeply flawed, all I can think of is that some more hard core board gamers don't like it because it's too lite but that's what makes it so great as a starting point for people. Plus sometimes it's nice to play a nice lite social game
