I am responsible for policing my own. Just how might I have done that?

Actually, you're doing it now. The public outrage and media frenzy have done a great job policing the system, leading to resignations and dismissals of the responsible, and ensuring that in future, employees of the child protection services will be that much more careful about the lives they are in part responsible for. Don't underestimate the power of talking about things with people - even if you're not politically active.

Submission + - Vista Download Disaster

SkinnyGuy writes: "Downloading Windows Vista sounds like a great idea — until you actually do it. Looks like Microsoft hasn't thought out all the fine details. PC Magazine's own publisher gave it a shot and recounts his sorry tale to columnist Lance Ulanoff. Some other tales of woe appear in the associated forum."
Robotics

Submission + - Robots team up for tricky tasks

Matthew Sparkes writes: "A team of search-and-rescue robots have been developed, that are capable of collaborating to form a single larger robot when faced with certain challenges. Each of the robot's three detachable modules can function independently, but when combined the modules function as a single larger and more complex robot. It is possible to cover a search area much more quickly by dividing it between several independent units. Conversely, there are also benefits to working together. A larger robot can, for instance, span larger gaps and move larger objects."

Submission + - Dead Nigerian Parrots - 419 of them!

RockDoctor writes: The excellent 419eater.com should need little introduction to Slashdotees. So I won't.
The "Dead Parrot Sketch" should need little introduction to Slashdotees, or indeed any human beings. So I won't.

Put the two together, and with a looming sense of the inevitable you can picture what's coming up. Yes, you got it. Brace yourselves for 'The Nigerian Blue', nailed to a perch on U-Tube near you.

(Actually, I think the victims did quite a good job of the sketch. The ingenuity needed to materialise a wooden duck in downtown Lagos is quite impressive. If only they'd do something useful with their lives. Or make their metabolic processes a matter of interest only to historians.)
