Pretty sure this is the same kind of conversation that was had at GM before the fatalities and subsequent massive recall took place. Cut your losses Boeing and fix this now.

Lenovo has made their money selling very cheap equipment with very small margins in very large quantities. I'm really not sure how well this will translate into a market where buyers like you or me apply a lot more discretion to our choices. They are going to have to come out of the gate with excellent hardware and likely take a loss just to prove their merit.

To say you shouldn't work as hard at living longer because you don't want to live to 80+ is a bit off. For all you know, your body may require all that preventative effort just to reach 75. Not only that, when you start closing in on 75 you might find yourself feeling differently about the topic. Furthermore, the quality of life through advanced science and medicine may differ significantly from what it is now.

Actually, it would be more accurate if someone else was holding the sign and Google was just pointing it out. In this case I still say the guy holding the actual sign is the one you go after.

They aren't hosting the content, they're merely making pointers to it. Isn't this an issue that should be handled by the company hosting/managing the web content? I'm surprised Google is getting involved in this at all and it makes me wonder what their motivations for doing so are, given the obvious administrative burden this is imposing.

Two other airplanes (non-commercial with much lower loss of life and thus less interesting to news outlets I presume) were shot down within the week in similar airspace. Why aren't we discussing those? Go ahead and try to put a techie spin on it, but the point remains that we're only oogling over this because a bunch of people died, which not only seem distasteful, but again, has nothing to with the type of news this site represents.

This is a tragic story, but why is this on Slashdot? This is indeed stuff that matters, but news for nerds? Not so much.

So what you're saying is the second anyone infringes on the rights of a group you belong to you automatically band together in protest, even if it's at the potential expense of your livlihood? Gathering legitmate evidence to make a reasonable case for your claim takes time. Rallying troops together takes time. Planning for possibly not having a job if this backfires takes time. I guess fortunate for you that firing off a [weird] rant on Slashdot doesn't take any time at all.

To be clear, USAF awarded ULA (United Launch Alliance, jointly run by Boeing and Lockheed) the uncompeted contract. What this prevents is ULA from making purchases from Russia for parts, which essentially cripples their entire contract since the Russian parts included the first-stage engine I believe. Without that, ULA doesn't have a functional rocket as far as I can tell. I'm sure ULA will find an intermediary who will "just happen" to have some of these engines laying around that they can then use to fulfill the contract. The bigger question is whether the contract as a whole will be recompeted, as it should.
