Submission + - iPhone hype has bred hysteria (wired.com)

BrianRagle writes: "Wired is running a story that the Apple iPhone's total cost of ownership could end up being...*gasp*...as much as one MILLION dollars!! Actually, their claim is closer to $6000, based upon cost of equipment, activation fee, and a 2 year contract with a $220 per month rate plan. Even more interesting, they belie their own hysterical headline with an "update" from Endgadget (of all places) which states the prices are pretty reasonable after all when compared against other smartphones in the market. This is followed by another update offering a sort-of apology to commenters who pointed out the obviousness of this contrived article.

Hysteria:

I think the apparent lack of hidden charges is one of the things Apple scores big with: unlike so much in the cellphone game, you know what you're getting. It'll be interesting to see the first bills out from AT&T, so we can do an accounting of nickel and diming like the Federal Hogwash Fee and the New Mexico State Chump Charge.

Mea Culpa:

Before furiously heading for the comment box, please take a quick tour of our other posts today on Apple and the iPhone, most of which are extremely lovey. I'll be buying one of these fellas myself, so put the e-Meter away: I'm totally in the cult already.

I don't know which is worse. That Beschizza felt this topic was worthy of an entire posting or that he backed down so feebly in the face of others pointing out the obvious."

Walt Mossberg Reviews the iPhone 564

WSJdpatton writes "Walt Mossberg tested the iPhone for two weeks, in multiple usage scenarios, in cities across the US. His verdict is that, despite some flaws and feature omissions, the iPhone is on balance a beautiful and breakthrough hand-held computer. Its software especially sets a new bar for the smart-phone industry, and its clever finger-touch interface, which dispenses with a stylus and most buttons, works well, though the lack of physical buttons can be a hindrance." Digital Daily has a roundup of early iPhone reviews.

The verdict: it seems to be a good extremely portable computer (except for the problematic keyboard) and music player, just not a very good phone.

Submission + - Digital Playground Announces Porn for iPhone

An anonymous reader writes: If some porn business was going to embrace Apple's iPhone, then it would HAVE to be Digital Playground, truly an innovator when porn meets modern technology. Today, the prolific producer of high-brow XXX movies announced it would be the first provider of hard-core movies for Apple iPhone users. Company president Samantha Lewis is in "awe," according to the press release. "I'm so honored to know that Digital Playground is the first AGAIN. I'd like to thank all of our friends at Apple and Adult DVD Empire for their combined efforts to see this through." Will Apple shares rise on the news?
It's funny. Laugh.

Submission + - NYC iPhone queue guy exposed (knowyourmobile.com)

muckton writes: UK website Know Your Mobile reveals that the guy that's been all over the Internet this week as the man at the head of the iPhone queue outside New York's Apple Store is not a die-hard Mac fan at all. Greg Packer is instead a professional queuer and well-known publicity seeker. He's stood in various lines over the last 10 years for everything from being the first to sign Princess Diana's condolences book to getting a free bus ride with R&B singer Brandy.

Such is his fame-seeking notoriety for anything and everything that Associated Press has banned its journalists from ever quoting him again.

As the story puts it: "In short, here is a man who wouldn't just go to the opening of an envelope, he'd take the stamp for his collection."

Submission + - Boeing's new 787 wings: Amazingly bendy (wired.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Boeing is making the wings of its new 787 out of carbon fiber instead of metal. That means the wings are so strong and flexible that they could bend upwards and touch above the fuselage — or come close. The company is expected to deliver the first 787 to All Nippon Airlines in May 2008. From Aviation Week:

Boeing has completed static testing of a three-quarter wingbox, but engineers are still considering whether to limit testing of the full wing to a 150% load limit held for 3 sec. of to continue bending it to see when it breaks. "There's a raging debate within the engineering team to see if we should break it or not," says [787 General Manager Mike] Bair.

Submission + - First Authorized iPhone Reviews Roll In

An anonymous reader writes: From Digital Daily: The first reviews of the iPhone published to the Web at 3 PM PST today and seem to be generally positive with the typical caveats about Apple's choice of cell phone carriers. Walt Mossberg says that "despite some flaws and feature omissions, the iPhone is, on balance, a beautiful and breakthrough handheld computer." David Pogue says it's "so sleek and thin, it makes Treos and BlackBerrys look obese." More reviews to be found in Digital Daily's review round-up.
