Sleep Mailing Screenshot-sm 195

Doctors have reported the first case of someone using the internet while asleep, when a sleeping woman sent emails to people asking them over for drinks and caviar. The 44-year-old woman found out what she had done after a would be guest phoned her about it the next day. While asleep the woman turned on her computer, logged on by typing her username and password then composed and sent three emails. Each mail was in a random mix of upper and lower cases, unformatted and written in strange language. One read: "Come tomorrow and sort this hell hole out. Dinner and drinks, 4.pm,. Bring wine and caviar only." Another said simply, "What the......." If I had known that researchers were interested in unformatted, rambling email I would have let them read my inbox. They could start a whole new school of medicine.

US Cyber Command Wants Greater Attack Mentality 257

superglaze writes "Lieutenant General Robert J Elder, Jr, a senior figure in US Air Force Cyber Command (AFCYBER), has told ZDNet UK that communication issues are hampering the division's co-ordination. 'IT people set up traditional IT networks with the idea of making them secure to operate and defend,' said Elder. 'The traditional security approach is to put up barriers, like firewalls — it's a defense thing — but everyone in an operations network is also part of the [attack] force. We're trying to move away from clandestine operations. We're looking for real physics — a bigger bang resulting in collateral damage.'"

Comment Hi new blenderer! (Score 1) 3

Hope you don't mind... I've been keeping kind of a low profile on the 'dot lately, so I didn't really want to reply to your current post... so I thought I'd say hi in this old journal entry instead. I hope you'll see it!

Blender! I've been working with Blender on and off for almost a year now! I hope you'll come join us over at http://blenderartists.org/forum; they're a nice bunch of people and very helpful. Blender is somewhat painful to learn, in the early stages, but with a little help, once you get into the swing of things, it's actually surprisingly easy to use!

I also set up a website, http://blender.sakelley.org, which has some GPLed texture plugins, and not much else at the moment. I'm still (usually) to shy to post my own work anywhere... but I've done almost 200 stills, and I'm working on a short film.

If I can be of any help, please do let me know. Email's in my slashdot profile.

Good job on the sword, too! :-)

Oh, and congrats on the wedding (and on surviving it)! I haven't been posting, but I have been reading...

Submission + - Spintronics in silcon

TeutonTom writes: "Scientific American has an article on the first use of spintronics in silicon. By injecting the electrons into the silicon so that the spins are aligned chips can be produced that require a fraction of the power of current chips. The reduction in power consumption also produces less waste heat."

Submission + - Multiple Spindle Drilling / Boring / Tapping

Joe Agro writes: "(PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST OR AT WEB SITE BELOW UNDER APPLICATION
EXAMPLES)

AutoDrill makes available a method to drill multiple hole patterns on a
standard single spindle drill press or milling machine. Their affordable
multiple spindle heads can increase production and are available for
virtually all drilling equipment.

Drill complex patterns in one-step, virtually eliminate setup and operation
errors, extend tool life and stop for changes less often.

Standard are ER collets and one-shot grease lubrication is designed into
every head for low maintenance and trouble free operation. These
gear-driven heads are constructed with efficient helical gearing for
high-speed operation and lower noise levels. Ball and needle bearing
construction is used insuring long-term quality assurance under heavy loads.

Adapters can be provided for any conventional drilling machine, motor
mounts, automatic drilling and tapping equipment and even CATxx taper
machines.

Multiple hole drilling capacities can exceed .750" diameter with standard
tooling. Multiple spindle tapping applications are also addressed on a
regular basis.

equipment, contact:

Journal Journal: Happy Birthday!

I suppose I should have said something about why I went four months or so without a journal entry. But what can I say? In many ways, things are very difficult right now, and I'm facing new challenges I don't know how to respond to. This tends to leave me a little down, and I decided I didn't want to write a long succession of depressing journal entries... so I didn't.

But today I have something good to write about. Something that makes me very happy.

Journal Journal: Goodbye, Grandma. I Wish I'd Known You.

Well, room 209 is sure different from room 131!

209 is on the second floor, which isn't really surprising. Since I brought about twice as much crap as last time, it was really almost inevitable that I'd have to drag it all across the parking lot and up a flight of stairs. 131 was on the first floor, and the whole time I was there, I managed to park less than six feet from my car.

The hotel supposedly has wireless internet access, but in practice, it only works with the screen of my iBook pressed flat against the window, held chest-high. It's rather hard to type that way. And the signal is so weak, it really is a little like trying to communicate with the Voyager space probe.

If I had a 10baseT cable, I could plug into the wired network jack instead. "Gee, Sarah, do you have a 10baseT cable with you?" Do I? What do you think, hmm?

Journal Journal: Random Updates On The Occassion of My 10k Milestone

Sorry, these are all little snippets; I'm trying to do Real Work in another window.

I'm stuck at work despite the fact that everyone else left early. I had to go to the doctor at lunchtime and traffic was a nightmare, so I'm staying put for another couple hours. Maybe it will be a little better then. Maybe.

Bio-Engineered Rice Uses Human Genes 417

gliph writes "Yahoo news has a piece about a small biogenetics firm that is using genetically engineered rice containing human genes to help fight diarrhea. From the article: 'Ventria's rice produces two human proteins found in mother's milk, saliva and tears, which help people hydrate and lessen the severity and duration of diarrhea attacks, a top killer of children in developing countries.'"

Journal Journal: Yawn...

My brain still isn't quite recalibrated from my little adventure; I went to bed at 10pm last night, then woke up at 2am and never really got back to sleep. I hate it when that happens.

Journal Journal: My Surgical Adventure

[April 26]

Well, it appears that I've survived my "little" surgery.

It felt really weird wearing sweatpants to work, but they had said to wear loose clothing, and the friend who was going to take me there works across the hall from me, and since we didn't have to be there until 11, it made sense for her to just pick me up early in the morning and go hang out at the office until it was time to leave.

Journal Journal: An Alien Update

I'm way overdue for an update here... I've actually tried to write a bunch of different times, but somehow, I just haven't been able to do it. Then last weekend, I finally did write a very nice journal entry. It was about Easter baskets. It was pretty cool. But I thought it sounded too much like one of those things that would get me more advice than I know what to do with, and maybe make people angry too, so I don't know if I'll ever post it.

Journal Journal: Quick Updates, and A List Of Words

Hi everybody!

Sorry I haven't written... I was sick for a while... then real life was busy... etc... sigh.

Three Quick things:

First, thank you all very much for the comments, both privately, and in email. Though I haven't always been able to respond, I always appreciate the support... and yes, the help, too. I even made banana bread!
