Submission + - The Use of truth serum to confirm insanity (cbsnews.com)

xclr8r writes: James Holmes representation did not enter a plea today in with regards to the Aurora, Co. Movie theatre shooting so the Judge entered a plea of not guilty for James that could be changed at a later date by Holmes' attorney. The judge entered an advisory that if the plea was changed to Not Guilty by insanity that Holmes would be subject to a "narcoanalytic interview" with the possibility of medically appropriate substances could be used e.g. so called truth serums. Holmes defense looks to have initially objected to this but as the previous article seems to infer that some compromises are being worked out. This certainly raises legal questions on how this is being played out 5th, 14th amendments. The legal expert in the second article states this is legal under Co. law but admits there's not a huge amount of cases regarding this. I was only able to find Harper v State where a defendant willingly underwent truth serum and wanted to submit the interview on his behalf but was rejected due to the judge not recognizing sufficient scientific basis to admit the evidence.

Submission + - Fiber Optic Spanner (Wrench) developed at U.T. Arlington (photonics.com)

xclr8r writes: A technique to use fiber optics to adjust microscopic particles has been developed. Applications of this technology can be used in a number of ways including cancer research. This technology could be used to actually manipulate DNA. Associate Professor of Physics, Samarendra Mohanty, states that macroscale applications are a possibility including "direct conversion of solar energy to mechanical energy" or even contemplating that it could possibly “simulate an environment in which photons radiated from the sun could propel the reflective motors in solar sails, a promising future technology for deep-space travel.”

Submission + - Slackware: I'm not dead yet!

xclr8r writes: The longtime tinkering and learning distro of Linux http://www.slackware.com/ found itself at the center of rumors and speculation when its website was down for a few days. Caitlyn Martin voiced concerns in DistroWatch and declared that she would be basing the new project off a distro with a more secure future. Meanwhile contributors continued to plug along with additions to the change log http://slackware.osuosl.org/slackware64-current/ChangeLog.txt . Eventually Eric Hameleers expanded on his initial communication of "old hardware — lack of funds" to a more thorough explanation quoted in the article. Submission + - Healthcare IT, FOSS and grass roots initiatives

xclr8r writes: Today President-elect Obama had a news conference announcing Tom Daschle [change.gov]as his Secretary for Human and Health Services. He mentioned that he and his team would be going through a discovery process in the future, even including grass roots input from his "Change is Coming" [barackobama.com] event this coming weekend (enter your zipcode for events near you). Among the issues Barack Obama mentioned briefly was IT in Health care. At the risk of sounding like slashvertisement the question has to be asked. Is this an opportunity for the advocates for FOSS to make serious headway in publicity and awareness by contributing to a nationwide solution for Health Care?

Submission + - Multi-tiered rates for MMO subsrciptions.

xclr8r writes: Game spot has an article on the new PlayPlus subscription system being implemented by the publishers of the Archlord game. The subsription offers 3 tiers of subscription level and can be purchased on monthly, quarterly or semi-yearly basis. Examples of the perks for buying higher level of subsription include higher earned xp rate, increased attack skill/ability or being able to summon a party member. What do you think of this multi-tiered payment system? Will you pay more to level faster?
