Censorship

Submission + - Zune HD Twitter app censoring tweets (engadget.com)

SharpFang writes: The new Zune HD Twitter app censors naughty words out of tweets in your timeline. Sure, it's a free app, but this kind of active content censorship just rubs us the wrong way — even worse than Apple's various Twitter-related App Store shenanigans.

Submission + - Engraving lo-res holograms in a copper plate 1

SharpFang writes: "White light holograms are a special case of holography in that they only preserve horizontal phase information and do not operate via interference. It is possible to make a white light hologram with macroscopic line spacing although the resolution is extremely low." A hologram of a cube engraved in a copper plate using a CNC mill in daylight looks like just a bunch of curvy lines, but when you shine a point light at it, the reflections in the grooves resolve into the shape which changes as you move.
Media

Submission + - SuprNova is back (suprnova.tfr.se)

SharpFang writes: Suprnova is back, under the wings of guys from PirateBay. In a welcome message, they write "This is how it works. Whatever you sink, we build back up. Whomever you sue, ten new pirates are recruited. Wherever you go, we are already ahead of you. You are the past and the forgotten, we are the internet and the future. y'arr!"
Bug

Submission + - Roving bug - requesting advisory

SharpFang writes: Several news sources have reported how the Big Brother (this time FBI) exploited the `roving bug' to eavesdrop on conversations happening near cell phones of chosen people by remotely switching the microphone of the phone on. `The "roving bugs" were approved by a judge after the more conventional bugs planted at specified locations were discovered by members of the crime family, who then started to conduct their business dealings in several additional locations, including more restaurants, cars, a doctor's office and public streets.' So: which models of phones are affected by the bug, which ones can be used `whether the phone was powered on or off' and who's gonna write a patch?
