The Republicans noticed two facts:

1. The USA is a democracy and you hold power by getting most of the voters to vote for you. 2. McDonald's is the largest and most successful restaurant chain in the USA, yet the food is utter crap and kills the customers.

After they put these two facts together, they figured out that if they use mass advertising campaigns and catchy slogans to appeal to emotion with a pack of lies, they can hold power while simultaneously raping and pillage The Middle Class and The Middle Class would thank them and ask for some more. Ya gotta hand it to them, since Reagan started it, they've been remarkably effective while the Democrats have better, more honorable ideas, they are completely ineffective mass communicators.

You do know that President Hopechange isn't a Republican, right?

No, he meant "hospital ship". And it has been used without US blowing up a country, but you probably think US caused the earthquake to occupy Haiti.

Submission + - Apple Reports Record Revenue

adeelarshad82 writes: Apple reported record revenue for its fiscal third quarter of 2010, on the back of its newly-launched iPad and record Macintosh sales. Apple reported a net profit of $3.25 billion on revenue of $15.7 billion, both of which shot up dramatically from a year ago, when Apple reported profits of $1.83 billion on revenue of $9.73 billion. According to predictions by Thomson Reuters poll, Apple could surpass Microsoft in revenues who are expected to report revenue of $15.25 billion. Apple Macintosh computer sales were up by 33% from a year ago, and iPhone sales increased by 61% compared to a year ago. However, iPod sales dropped by 8%.

It is however Apple's right to shoot themselves in the foot by becoming an even more closed juggernaut like Microsoft. These companies can literally have no long term future if they keep it up.

I tend to think this was meant as a joke but with so many slashdotters prideful for possessing superior business acumen than Steve Jobs, I'm not so sure.

I RTFA, and I think it's the most well-thought-out criticism of Jobs' anti-Flash editorial I've seen so far The author maintains "the way out of the Adobe vs. Apple cage match is straightforward, and exists already: free software operating systems like GNU/Linux with free software Web browsers, supporting free media formats like Ogg Theora" and later concludes, "So, the correct decision in the dispute between Apple and Adobe is "none of the above." The past we need to leave behind is not just Flash, it's Apple's proprietary software as well." I agree with that in principle.

I too RTFA, and am now convinced of superiority and holiness of free software. I'm going to ditch my iPhone for Openmoko, pronto.

Why do people keep citing Apple TV as an example of failed Apple product? I know it hasn't been a runaway success like iPod and iPhone but Apple TV is estimated to have sold 8 million units since its launch in March 2007. Compare that to a "successful" product like Kindle which have sold an estimated 3 million units since its launch in November 2007. What am I missing?

Do they have any reputable universities ?

Ummm, well, yes. Only problem is that they teach in Japanese - so they can't really be teaching anything important, could they?

Ummm, well, universities in Japan do have courses taught in English. Only problem is that they generally suck. Of the world top 20 universities, 13 are from US and none are from Japan.

Do they have cutting edge biotech, nano or healthcare facilities ?

Don't you keep up with tech news?

If you did, you will realize US leads the world (linked PDF is in Japanese but you being such a cosmopolitan I'm sure you won't have a problem with it).

Do they walked on the moon or have significant space presence ?

Well, yes actually, they do have quite a significant space presence.

Are you seriously suggesting JAXA is somehow on par with NASA? If presence of Wikipedia article makes it true: Bangladesh has a significant space presence.

Just look at Japan. A very large percentage of the Japanese population uses their cell phones in ways that would put iPhone users to shame. That is not even mentioning that Japanese cities have much higher population densities than American cities, and you don't hear stories of how the Japanese phone network is falling apart.

14th century Europeans fantasizing about Japan as "land of gold" was cute, but these rampant portrayal of Japan as something of technical nirvana is, I dare say, borderline pathetic. The supposed 22nd century phones that "puts iPhone users to shame" exists only in Japanophile's head. In reality iPhone is vastly superior to anything Japan has made thus far. And those super cool and infallible Japanese phone network? Oh, they just throttle their network.

Submission + - Is HD DVD Staging a Comeback?

An anonymous reader writes: After months of sitting on the sidelines as Blu-ray took the lead in next-gen disc sales, it looks like HD DVD may be staging a comeback. According to Amazon's sales ranks, HD DVD has been trending up over the last three weeks, and is now almost on par with Blu-ray. Meanwhile, this past weekend, pre-orders of the HD DVD release of 'Planet Earth: The Complete Series' managed to hit #4 on Amazon's overall list of top selling DVDs — that's three notches higher than Blu-ray famously scored last month with 'Casino Royale.'
