Rumor has it that they've killed their first MeeGo phone before it launched, and that Elop — an ex-Microsoft exec — may be seeking to put Windows Phone 7 on Nokia handsets.

adeelarshad82 writes: To no surprise Verizon iPhone looks a lot like the AT&T iPhone. The real difference is in its ability to do things. PCMag's Editor In Chief was one of the few who got to test out the iPhone on the Verizon network over the past few days. As expected, Verizon iPhone was a much more consistent performer, providing stable connection and slightly better call quality over AT&T. Part of this was because of the dual CDMA antennas that sit on either side of the phone, which also took care of the "death grip". Aside from the stability, acting as a personal hotspot was another first for the Apple iPhone, which gives it the ability to connect five other devices to the internet over Wi-Fi. While acting as a hotspot, the iPhone showed how many people were connected to it. This was to ensure that there weren't more people leeching off the connection. While not exactly perfect, Verizon iPhone offerred a more consistent user experience.

A new report, however, based on the fact that 10% of Facebook users pay for virtual items and the average micro-transaction spend of $55 per user, shows some interesting results on how much money Facebook titles really make. Games like CityVille and FarmVille easily rank alongside or in some cases exceed console blockbusters like Call of Duty, Halo, Madden and Mario.

Actually I'm surprised that it was Sony rather than Apple that came up with this idea.

Well, Apple certainly has come up with the idea even though they haven't yet realized it.

Abstract:
An electronic device uses separate surfaces for input and output. One of the surfaces (e.g., the bottom) includes a force-sensitive touch-surface through which a user provides input (e.g., cursor manipulation and control element selection). On a second surface (e.g., the top), a display element is used to present information appropriate to the device's function (e.g., video information), one or more control elements and a cursor. The cursor is controlled through manipulation of the back-side touch-surface. The cursor identifies where on the back-side touch-surface the user's finger has made contact. When the cursor is positioned over the desired control element, the user selects or activates the function associated with the control element by applying pressure to the force-sensitive touch-surface with their finger. Accordingly, the electronic device may be operated with a single hand, wherein cursor movement and control element selection may be accomplished without lifting one's finger.

An anonymous reader writes: Even though Microsoft’s public stance, when asked about the impact of Apple’s slate is “iPad? What iPad?”, the Redmondians are preparing the company’s partners for battle in 2011.

Microsoft is making available to its reseller partners marketing collateral to help them defend against the iPad’s encroachment into the enterprise market. I had a chance to check out a PowerPoint dated December 2010 on “Microsoft Commercial Slate PCs” that the company is offering to its partners to help them explain Microsoft’s slate strategy to business users.

IBM Launching an Open Desktop Solution 224

DJ_Maiko writes "IBM just announced their intent to release an open desktop solution which they're calling "Open Client Offering." The new offering will make it possible for big businesses to present their employees with a choice of running Linux, Macintosh or Windows software on desktop PCs, using the same underlying software code, which will cut the cost of managing Linux or Apple relative to Windows. If this project succeeds, it will make it unnecessary for companies to pay Microsoft for licenses for items that don't rely on Windows-based software. IBM plans to also roll this out in-house to 5% of their 320,000 employees worldwide. This sure seems like a promising endeavor. "

nursegirl writes "Norwich, Conn seventh grade teacher, Julie Amero has been convicted of four counts of risk of injury to a minor after her classroom PC displayed pornographic pop-ups in class. While an expert for the defendant said he had discovered spyware on her PC that had been downloaded from a hairstyling site, the local police investigator claimed that the spyware had been downloaded from actively visiting porn sites. Amero testified that she had told four other teachers and the assistant principal about the popups, but received no assistance. The school's internet filtration software was not working because it's license had expired. Amero faces up to forty years in prison."
