Submission + - Why does Slashdot now hate Firefox? 1

dnebin writes: Slashdot now seems to hate Firefox. Javascript is broken, requiring double clicks on things in Firefox that work correctly in other browsers. And it's been that way for some time now; it is not like these problems were introduced yesterday and I'm now complaining. So I'm forced to ask, why does Slashdot now hate Firefox?

Comment I don't buy it... (Score 1) 366

The reason - my galaxy S. It's an android-based phone, but it has this big 'bing' page and bing is set as the default search engine. I've looked for how to change to google, but it doesn't seem to be that easy...

So if my device is included in their percentage, it's not because I want to be there...

The mad rush for World Series seats got under way Monday as 60,000 tickets went up for sale, but only online. The Web site received 8.5 million hits in the first 90 minutes the system was up and running. Fans booed as Alves made the announcement outside Coors Field. Submission + - Pentagon Confirms It Sought To Build A 'Gay Bomb'

El Lobo writes: A Berkeley watchdog organization that tracks military spending said it uncovered a strange U.S. military proposal to create a hormone bomb that could purportedly turn enemy soldiers into homosexuals and make them more interested in sex than fighting.

"The notion was that a chemical that would probably be pleasant in the human body in low quantities could be identified, and by virtue of either breathing or having their skin exposed to this chemical, the notion was that soliders would become gay," explained Edward Hammond, of Berkeley's Sunshine Project.

Submission + - Parallelize applications for faster Linux booting

An anonymous reader writes: A common complaint about GNU/Linux is the amount of time the operating system takes to start. There are several independent tasks involved to evolve from a cold Linux system to one that you can interact with through a shell or window manager. This article takes you through all major stages of Linux boot and initialization.

Submission + - Federal agencies ban Windows Vista

dalmiroy2k writes: Federal agencies ban Windows Vista

As Microsoft is out touting the "wow" of Windows Vista, two federal agencies are among those saying "whoa."

The Department of Transportation (DOT) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) cite fear of compatibility problems as one of the reasons not to allow their tens of thousands of employees to upgrade to Microsoft's latest operating system.

"We are temporarily not permitting computers with the Vista operating system to be connected to our networks," Michael Baum, a NIST spokesman, said Tuesday. The organization's technology staff is testing NIST applications and evaluating the security in Windows Vista. The same holds true for Internet Explorer 7 and Office 2007, he said.

It is not unusual that agencies aren't rushing to install major software updates. Large organizations in particular tend to do a lot of testing before upgrading. The same happened when Microsoft released Service Pack 2 for Windows XP. The actions by DOT, which employs about 54,000 people, and NIST, with 2,900 employees, were first reported by Information Week.

The DOT also bans Vista, Office 2007 and IE 7. In addition to compatibility concerns, the department lists cost, available funding and a pending headquarters move as reasons not to upgrade, according to a DOT memo dated January 19 (click for PDF of the memo). The memo is still current, a DOT representative said Tuesday.

Australia Outlaws Incandescent Light Bulb 944

passthecrackpipe writes "The Australian Government is planning on making the incandescent light bulb a thing of the past. In three years time, standard light bulbs will no longer be available for sale in the shops in Australia (expect a roaring grey market) and everybody will be forced to switch to more energy efficient Fluorescent bulbs. In this move to try and curb emissions, the incandescent bulb — which converts the majority of used energy to heat rather then light — will be phased out. Environmental groups have given this plan a lukewarm reception. They feel Australia should sign on to the Kyoto protocol first. A similar plan was created together with Phillips, one of the worlds largest lighting manufacturers."
