Submission + - Hungarian Officials Can Now Censor the Media

An anonymous reader writes: Hungary is set to regulate the media, including web-published content, under a new law applicable today. The law requires all the media to provide a "balanced view" and must not go against
"public morality", and places all publications under the control of a new regulating body, whose top members have all been nominated by Prime minister Viktor Orban.

Orban, whose strong ways have been compared to Putin's, has been tightening his grip over Hungary. "In the seven months since Orban came to power with a two- thirds parliamentary majority, he has implemented retroactive taxes in violation of the constitution, curbed the Constitutional Court’s power, effectively nationalized private pension funds and put ruling-party allies in charge of at least four independent institutions, including the audit office".

Citizens sentenced in application of the new law can still challenge it at the European Court of Human Rights — see you in a few years.

Submission + - If the teacher had just answered the question ... (whitehouse.gov)

soupman55 writes: In answer to the question "Who was your favorite science teacher?", Dr Warren Washington (2010 US National Medal Laureate of Science, Technology and Innovation) answered along these lines:

"I was very fortunate to have a high school chemistry teacher who did not answer the questions that students asked. She asked the students to try and find out the answer. I asked her why egg yolks are yellow and she said 'Find out'. It took me a few weeks of research of the literature. It had to do with the seeds chickens eat and the sulfur compounds in the seeds. I wouldn't have got started in science if the teacher had just answered the question."

Comment Re:Nice story submission! (Score 1) 98

Seriously, three short lines which clearly convey the entire summary of the story, contains lots of links to both story and background, AND doesn't contain terrible typos! Also, geeky and interesting. This is what slashdot needs more of.

This just means you didn't see my 1st submission which was full of typos and mis-spellings.. :-)

Submission + - 'Zombie' Satellite Returns to Life (space.com)

realperseus writes: The American telecommunication satellite, Galaxy 15, has been brought under control after spending most of the year traversing the sky, wreaking havoc upon its neighbors. The satellite is currently at 98.5 west (from 133 west). An emergency patch was successfully uploaded, ensuring that the conditions which caused it to "go rogue" will not occur again. Once diagnosis and testing have been completed, Intelsat plans to move the satellite back to 133 west."

Submission + - FBI's New Anti-Terrorism Business Model (npr.org) 1

ideonexus writes: Am I the only one who thinks the FBI's new anti-terrorism strategy sounds more like a business model? Unable to find active terrorists to prosecute, the agency is now finding potential suspects, people who might commit a terrorist act if given the opportunity, providing those individuals the opportunity with fake bombs and missiles, arresting them in the act of fake terrorism, and then making press releases exclaiming "TERRORIST PLOT FOILED BY FBI," resulting in more Federal spending going to the agency. I don't dispute that these wannabe terrorists should be imprisoned, but shouldn't the FBI provide more context about the terrorist plots so as not to terrify the American people?

The White House Listed On Real Estate Website 123

Forget visiting the White House, if you have $10 million you can own it. At least that is the price for the president's home on the real estate website Redfin. From the article: "Obviously this is an error. It looks like Redfin software pulled an example listing from the website Owners.com by mistake. That example listing was the White House. We have e-mailed Redfin for comment." I know it's historic but it still looks a bit on the high side according to the comparables in the area.

I work for a health insurance company. We have about 1000 employees. Most folks have their phone on the Left side of their cube.

During transfers and moves, I do ask these users where they would like their phone in their new work area. Over 80% want their phone on the left side of their cube.

These are observations seen over 6 years at the job.
