Comment Re:This is modern terrorism. (Score 2) 127

Sounds like a hard nut to crack. Especially since there seems to be a wave of sorts going on:

Eight people were arrested Friday morning for attempting to steal 700 pounds of walnuts from an orchard west of Porterville, the Tulare County Sheriff's Department said.

About 10 a.m. the sheriff's department received a call about a theft in progress at the corner of Avenue 152 and Road 208 and arrived in time to stop the would-be walnut robbers. The walnuts were recovered at the orchard. Some were already loaded in three vehicles, the sheriff's department said.

The owner said he did not give anyone permission to remove walnuts from his orchard. They were valued at $1,020.

If you're not a caucasian you should be able to ditch your cell phone and any identifying papers and disappear into the background. In the US at least, if you're Hispanic you can probably run all over the country and no one will seriously stop or detain you, regardless of documentation. Even if local enforcement does, claim to be illegal and the Feds will likely release you. At best the government will even send you out of the country "back" to Mexico. From there it's to any country you want.

There's no easy answer for family though, but keep in mind that they can't be stopped from leaving US soil, only prevented from entering.

Think about the source folks. I'm an ex-Navy man so it pains me to say, but to me it seems obvious what's going on here. Ask yourself, does it benefit the Navy or Marines if we standardize on a subset of airframes? Who do you think would be the major driver of those designs? It's going to be the Air Force, and the needs of the fleet are going to come second to theirs.

Next, the Admiral himself brings up aircraft carriers, a platform not known for its stealthiness. In fact, pretty much any Navy ship designed for stealth is going to be smaller and have a small crew as well. He's defending his turf and his budget, which in a sense is very much his job as CNO. Or at least that's my take.

Go Navy, Beat Army! ;-)

The Internet

Submission + - Government didn't invent the Internet (wsj.com) 1

jaymzter writes: The Wall Street Journal is running an article that it claims seeks to dispel an urban legend about the internet: "The creation of the Arpanet was not motivated by considerations of war. The Arpanet was not an Internet". The position of the piece is that it was Xerox's contribution of Ethernet that enabled the global series of tubes we know and love today, and what's interesting is that the former head of DARPA supports this claim.

Off the top of my head with no assistance from that other wiki, I believe it is

England: Specifically England
Great Britain: The island of Great Britain (non-inclusive of surrounding isles)
United Kingdom: Refers to the union of Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Island

I've discussed this with an Englishman as well and he also seemed somewhat long winded and confused.

And nothing of value was lost.

Any reason why Viacom or any other such wastewater producer can't just switch to streaming all their shows? I know not everyone has a computer, but I don't see why `channels` can't cut out the middle man in some instances and go directly to end users on a contract type basis. Maybe simulcast on cable for those that care and streaming only for those that want a la carte. Seems like a revenue source waiting to be tapped.
