Submission + - Web store requires immigration documents to buy a 3

PineGreen writes: Recently I was trying to buy a laptop from a company that had good reviews online and the best price on the particular laptop I tried to buy. For some reason, my credit card did not process cleanly and hence I was asked to send them a scan of the credit card and my driver license. My driver license is still valid, but contains a note about the expiry date of my immigration status in the USA (which has since been renewed but the license does not show that). Even thought the driver license is acceptable for the TSA folk, the company is asking me to show them my immigration papers in order to buy a laptop. I find this somewhat infuriating. What can I do, besides reporting them to the BBB?

Comment Hubble wasn't that amazing (Score 2) 133

Hubble gave us a lot of very nice pictures, but let's be realistic: in terms of science per dollar we've got much more from combination of WMAP and SDSS I and II. JWST just killed a whole lot of more interesting projets in the same way LSST is now threathening to kill amazing and cheap projects like BigBOSS.

They should still fly JWST, after all this money spend it would be stupid to kill it and interesting things will come out of it. But let's be fair about science: pretty pictures that excite public are useful for PR, but for real science you need better than that.

Comment Windows 92%? OSX 4%? (Score 1) 296

I don't know where they get these numbers out! In my field, I don't know a single guy that is still on Windows. Last time I was on a workshop and there were 80 participants and exactly two PCs (me and a toothless french guy). In fact, all my friends are purely apple as well. I hear all these claims that windows still oversells apple, but it just doesn't click. I'd guess it is 95% OSX 5% apple and if I correct for selection effect, maybe 50%-50%, but this article claims just 4% OSX?!?! I haven't seen anybody using windows for a long time. In fact, I use bing just out of support for the underdog...

Comment Look at the price tag (Score 3, Interesting) 185

As a professional astronomer I hoped this thing would never have happened. It costs 6 billion and at this price tag a 5% overrun is $300 million, about six times the cost of the entire SDSS project, which has undoubtedly gave us more science that James Webb ever will. True, Hubble and JWST make great pictures, function as amazing PR machines, but most science at the end of the day comes from survey imaging and spectroscopic observations.

Comment Re:Man, if only... (Score 1) 414

That is not quite true. I have 10Mbit connection and if everybody on my network was utilizing their 10Mbps all the time, everything would come to a grinding halt. So, if they charged for usage, the total transfer would be lower and hence the infrastructure cost would be lower. It is quite clear that most of the traffic is not netflix, but 1% of guys maxing their connection by downloading porn via bit torrent - I think they should be charged more, there is nothing unfair about it.

Comment Re:Never, ever, ever, ever trust the government (Score 1) 275

To reply to all who are asking what is stopping me from going back to Europe: NYC is, after all, still the best of all options. In Paris one can never be French, in Tokyo one is never a Japanese and in London, food is just terrible plus jobs are rather limited in my field. I think NYC is the best place in the world to live in because it is a city of immigrants, a melting pot where there is always fun things to do. I love USA because of its multiculturalism and amazing nature, not because of its "freedoms", SUVs, etc. The problem with Americans is that they do not realise what really makes their country great and want to make it worse rather than better. The other thing: why am I not paying more in taxes: because if I paid more in taxes, this would be money thrown down the toilet. If everyone paid more in taxes, the standard of living would go up.

This kind of comments make me want to return to Europe. I've been living in US for a couple of years now, I have a 6 figure salary and you know what: I hate paying so little in taxes. Because you get what you pay for. In USA you have small government, no taxes and hence everyone gets routinely screwed up by private sector: I have never paid so much in telecommunications, so much in healthcare costs for the shittiest service ever and I just punctured tire on my audi last week because of a massive pothole on a *freeway*. But as long as you get screwed by private sector everyone is happy. And then because one gov service is bad, everybody starts screaming big government is the root of all evil. For fuck sake, have you people ever tried trains in germany or healthcare in UK? USA could have been such a good country, food can be so amazing in NY and multiculturalism beats everybody else, but if people were just a little bit more sensible brained....
